Detectives suspected that
Murray, staying in a down
town hotel, was involved in il
licit gambling. One evening
they checked the contents of
his waste basket after it had
been removed from the room
by a maid. Sure enough, they
found telltale numbers slips.
When the case came to
court, Murray’s lawyer object
ed to this evidence on grounds
of “unreasonable search and
seizure.” He pointed out that
the detectives had no warant
to search the waste basket.
But the court found the evi
dence admissible and Murray
guilty.
