The chem ical compound makes male animals infertile for several weeks but seems to leave them unchanged in other ways except for an occasion al slight weight loss. Hu mans will have to wait awhile, though: just to clear the compound for use in con trol of animal populations will take about two more, years. * The FDA, supported by the American Bakers Associa. tion and the Millers Nation al Federation, is considering a new regulation that could triple the amount of iron presently being added to en riched bread and flour. The intent is to combat a claim ed widespread iron deficien. cy anemia in the U.S., but the FDA first has to weigh the risks: Excess iron in the system is deposited in vul nerable organs such as the liver, pancreas, and heart. * The folks who argue that alcohol isn’t as deadly a drug as marijuana—or, for that matter, hard drugs— haven’t been looking at the statistics. According to toxi cologist Arthur McBav of the University of North Carolina, there have been no deaths in his state for the past three eyars from mes caline, marijuana, or am phetamine abuse. But drink ing? That’s something else again: In just two years, 188 North Carolinians have died from acute alcohol poison ing. drinking themselves to death in one sitting. * The people in India who study suicide statistics have concluded that mother-in- law trouble can be really serious: They blame it for 3,325 of India’s 43,633 sui cides in 1969 held for Mr. and Mrs. Byron Shuck honoring them on their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday. Miss Elma Shuck of Portland and Mrs. Elaine Ronson of Mil waukie. two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren Mrs. Shuck is active in civic- affairs and has been a mem ber of the Eastern Star lodge for 64 years. She is associated with the Santiam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was chosen “Woman of the Year” in 1960 at Stay ton. Mr. Shuck, although in ill health, is still able to do elec- trical jobs about the house. His hobby is wild flowers and he i maintains a beautiful yard of I trees and shrubbery.
