The Mill City Enterprise ______________________________________ ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANT1AM HIGHWAY — GATEWAY TO THE HEART OF NATURES EMPIRE VOLUME XV NUMBER 45 Good Reason For No Hunting Signs Is Given By Jean Roberts MEHAMA—The regular deer hunt ing season came to a close the past weekend, but hunting did not stop, according to reports from the Elkhorn and Mehama areas. Early this week a forked horn was shot by spotlighters in the Little North Fork area, long a favorite spot for hunters. Shot on the Bill Bickett property the deer was left and was still warm when found. Bickett. who allows hunt ing on his property, is indignant when hunters shoot indiscriminately among his beef stock, shoot holes in his barn roof and farm equipment. Still more spotlighters were re ported lengthening their deer season by patrolling roads just above Me hama. Rifle shots could be heard off and on all night. Two other spot lighters were ap prehended in the Fox Valley area Before doe season a car had been reported driving around fields at night flashing lights. It was discover ed afterward, however, that the oc cupants were not spotlighting to kill deer, they were spotlighting to scare them »o they wouldn’t all get shot in season. Chas. They immediately arose to investigate and found a slug from a high-powered rifle on the floor at the foot of their bed. Mrs. Bilyeu and their little 2-year-old son left the room immediately in case more shots followed. When they notified the police they were told that there had been a hold-up at a motdl about two blocks from their home and the police had fired at the rob bers but they had gotten away. Upon further investigation they found the bullet hole about one and a half inches from the win dow. Had the baby been in his bed where he usually slept, he would have been in a direct line from where the bullet went. Needless to say. the Bilyeus didn’t sleep the rest of the night.
