Dennis Kerney is a candidate for
sheriff of San Francisco ; his campaign
closely resembles that of Mr. Henry
George. He circulated lists for ilie
signatures of men willing to support
him, and he claims to have 11,965
names pledged. Every one of these
he counts upon to influence two others,
and, there you are. It is as s'mple as
Capt. Bobadil’s plan for the destruc
tion of an army. If elected, Dennis
promises to lift the office “out of the
deplorable rut in which it has been
run these many years.” “ The salary
allowed the sheriff by law,” he adds,
“ is $8,000 per year. This is an in
ducement, but it is not the office nor
the salary that I care about so much
as it is tp help break up a vicious sys
tem.” Dennis has written no great
treatise on political economy, but he
talks as patly and volubly as Mr.
George himself.
