Nothing, however, could daunt his clear-minded determination, and when the serious crisis came he sur mounted it with comparative ease, and inarched ahead more rapidly than ever. In 1881 he decided to look into the far West. He had accidentally heard of a great boom which was expected to sweep over North Dakota. The reported cases of poisoning from the use of alum baking powder have awakened the public to the seri ous danger which menaces the health of the people of the country in the numerous alum powders which are urged upon consumers. Generally, alum powders may be known from the price at which they are sold, or from the fact that they are accompanied by a gift, or are dis posed of under some scheme. The alum powder costs but a few cents per pound to make, and is often sold at 20 or 25 cents a pound; and sometimes as low as 10 cents. It is impossible to name all the alum powders in the market, but any baking powder sold at a low price, or advertised as costing much less than the well known, high class powders, or accompanied by a present, or dis posed of under any scheme, is of this class, detremental to health and to be avoided. These facts should incline consum ers to turn a deaf ear to all importu nities to buy the inferior powders. The wise housekeeper will decline in all eases to take them.
