TO SOLVE IT, * * A Problem Thai Vexes farmer« ■foes Hummer Fallow Bay? @7 Iu some parts of the country the prac tice of summer fallowing the land has been abandoned because it was thought that such practice caused an excessive loss of plant food from the soil by leach ing out. This question of course applies principally to those sections of country where the rainfall is sufficient to cause water to leach from the soil. The experiment station at Corvallis is going to try and answer the question. This fall the station specialists have had made a number of strong galvanized iron pots two feet in diameter and two feet deep, the sides and bottoms water tight with the exception of drainage pipes so fixed in the bottoms that all the drain age waters can escape through them and Everything but Ingrains for the next 60 days at a very LARGE DISCOUNT. * Must have room for more paper now on the road. * Yours Truly, H. Each pot is provided with a drainage pipe and jar for catch ing the water which leaches through. These pots are kept out of doors under normal conditions. All the pots are I tilled with the same lot of soil thorough ly mixed, each pot receiving exactly 500 pounds of the soil. On one or two pots summer fallow will be practiced and on otheT pots a rotation of crops without summer fallow. The drainage water from each pot as it leaches through will be caught and care fully analyzed from day to day so that the experimenters will know just how much plant food is being lost from each pot, or miniature field, and will be able to tell whether summer fallow causes an excessive loss or not. This work will be continued a number of years in order to get reliable and conclusive results.—Cor vallis Tinies. Noles on lhe Flecllon. The prohibition vote in this county shows a falling off since June of about 35 votes. The majority in McMinnville for Mc Kinley is 70 votes. Four years ago Bry an had a majority of 52. This is a re publican gain of 122. McMinnville gave a democratic major ity of 3 for Daly, democrat, for congress, last June The republicans are making strides in this town. A local populist was asked as the first returns came in, “How’s it going?" •' Well,’’ he replied, “Bryan has carried h—1 and Texas, While Missouri is still in doubt.” A story comes from Sheridan that two democrats, who raised and sold sheep in Cleveland days for $1.10, and who in Mc Kinley times have been getting |6 per head, walkerf up to the polls Tuesday anil voted their tickets blank. A poor way to show their appreciation of repub lican prosperity. In almost every precinct there were some defective ballots. Nome voters are slow to comprehend the Australian plan, A voter, evidently a republican, in East Dayton precinct crossed out everything below the republican electors. This is not ordinary republican intelligence. Another voter in one of the precincts marked one elector on four different tickets. The lone prohibitionist in Willamina precinct did not fail to reach the polls. He has I mcii casting that faithful little ballot for several yfcars. The republican majority in thia coun ty shows a gain of 305 votes over that of 180. Taken together, the precincts of Che- cowen and North Yamhill are a tie be- tween McKinley and Bryan. Lafayette carried for McKinley by one vote. This is a gain of four foi Bryan over F 96, though a much smaller vote was cast. MM VETTE Doug Bryan, of Tillamook, was over a few days ago. He reports some snow on the road The salmon are having a big run up Trask river. John Sampson was down to town a few days ago. Mrs. Del Klostennan, from Chehalem, was here on business a few days ago. The water in the river was too high to operate the locks for a time Elder Watters will hold quarterly meet ing next Sunday at n o'clock. Preach ing by the pastor at night The election passed off quietly on Tues day. New York, Indiana, Illinois, Wy oming, Nebraska and Lafayette all for McKinley. Hurrah for McKinley.
