FRIDAY, JUNE 15, 1900, If Bryan should keep still from now until November he could not gain enough votes by it to insure his election. It is reported that delegates are coming from Hawaii to attend the national conventions. It is not stated whether they are coming to “point with pride" or to “view with alarm.'’ It is a matter of peculiar note, that some of the eastern colleges have ad vanced so far in the use of the Eng lish language — between baseball, football and bicycle duties—as to call their last public exercises at the end of a term “closing exercises,'" instead of “commencement exercises.'' Oregon should feel complimented by the many nice things said of her by the Eastern press on the result of the June election. Even congress made it a subject of considerable dis cussion. Oregon is not ready yet to repudiate expansion, and as a people we are certainly wise enough to vote for our own interests. Anti-expansionists are overreach ing themselves when they insanely attack President McKinley because of the pros »cution of the war in the Philippines. He was not primarily responsible for the war, nor lias lie been alone in urging it to a finish. A violently unfair political arraignment is apt to become a boomerang, whack ing flu- would be whackers. California Consolidated Petroleum Company. Notice tothe Public. The reports that the New York Dental Parlors will open a branch office in Mc Minnville or any other small town in this v icinity or state are hereby denounced as false, for we w ill not open branch offices, neither will we send any of our men to do work there. Newberg’s beet sugar factory would furnish a cash market for beets at every railway station in Yamhill county—a crop which it is estimated would net the grower from $2(1 to $40 per acre. With the com pletion of the Yamhill locks, McMinn ville will have the advantage of river transportation to the factory, and in view of the “diversity of agriculture that the culture of beets would give, our farmers could well afford to set aside a few acres each, as a sugar beet experiment, in order to encourage the new enterprise on the one hand, and for their not improba ble personal gain on the other. CUeekly The persistence with which mis Tribune sionaries remain at their stations in the interior oftChina in the face of the mobs shows an unselfish devo tion to the missionary idea, but when it is all summed up it savors more of fanaticisms than of fortitude. The zeal that sent them has kept them there during the preliminary out breaks of lawlessness, regardless of the fact that, however valuable to civilization a living missionary may be, a dead missionary represents nothing but wasted effort. Civilized nations should bring their zealous servants of mercy home, or else em phatically tell China to cease tortur ing and murdering them. 5,000,000 $5,000,000 An old, staunch, tried and true friend of the American People, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and the pioneer in every movement calculated to advance the interests and in crease the prosperity of country people in every state in the Union.
