LOCAL NEWS. LOCAL DIRECTORY Miss Stella Patty left on Saturday for The Dalles, to visit friends for a week or ten days. Four hundred copies of the New Year's Oregonian will be sold in McMinnville this month. The Secular Sunday school has a free circulating library. The public is cor dially invited to examine it aud take a book to read. * Sam Iaiughlin of Sorth Yamhill has re turned from Dawson City. He started on the return home Dec. 22d and arrived in Skagway January 8tb, making the trip in 18 days, which he claimed to an < tregonian reporter he can prove is the fastest time ever made between the two cities. He had 16 dogs on his team, ami came through with only one mishap. Two dogs froze their legs and had to be shot, as they could not travel. At this time a blizzard was raging and the ther mometer registered 68 degrees beliw. They saved an Englishman who started out, hut was overcome with the cold. They tied a rope to him anti towed him about ten mileB to one of the roadhouses along the trail, and left him in good hands. One day they made 45 miles in nine hours, which is considered a phe nomenal run in that country. Mr. Laughlin went to Alaska on the first trip of the Elder. His partner has been in there for the past nine years. They own a number of good claims, and are well satisfied with the country. Mr. Laugh lin stated that not an ounce of American mail hail reached Dawson since the close of navigation last October. He passed 10 tons of United States mail piled up at Tagish lake, waiting to be sent to Daw son. Sam expects to return north in about three weeks to remain indefinitely. School Itooks at Hembree’s. A.
