W e hope the last city caucus, as a means of forestalling a free and fair vote at the elections, has been held in McMinnville. Let the party lines be drawn hereafter and let each party caucus if it wants to, with the view to bringing out the best ticket pos sible, then let the people take their choice. M r . C hrisman should not and will not, we think, be elected mayor of the city. It is the generally accept ed belief that his candidacy stands for return to open Sunday saloons and a hearty stand-in with the “boys.’’ We have had a pretty de cent condition of things for two years, and it has been due to the co operation of the mayor and council, and especially to the determination of the former that the laws should be obeyed. There is nothing in going backward. S enator C handler of New Hamp shire, who is editor of the Concord Monitor, in a recent editorial under thecaption “Our Coming War with England,” says: “War between the United States and England is inevit able. It will rise on account of Brit ish disregard for our direct interests. It will also be forced by British enroachments upon other nations all over the world. It will be fought by us, having Russia as our European ally. As a war offensive on our part, it may not happen for 20 years. As a defensive war, it may come sooner, and should be welcomed. One sure re sult will be the capture and perma nent acquisition of Canada by the United States.” England’s aggress ions and disregard for our interests will become less notable with the re tirement of the Cleveland administra tion. There may be nothing desir able left in sight by that time how ever. OCR WAR FOOTINC. There are people who believe we are on the eve of an inevitable con flict with Great Britain. While we do not fully share the apprehension ahd are not near as anxious to see it as Senator Chandler of New Hamp shire, it is nevertheless interesting to compare notes and see bow we would stand at the present time on a moral footing compared to other na tions. We get the following state ment from a reliable source. England has 29 battle-ships of the first class, 8 of the second class and 7 of the third class; 41 cruisers of the tirst class, 59 of the second class and 192 of the third class, with 17 port-defense vessels, including ar mored gunboats, etc., and 136 tor pedo craft, making a total of 489 war vessels. Russia has 18 battleships, 14 first-class cruisers, 2 second-class cruisers, 55 third-class cruisers, 25 port-defense vessels and 75 torpedo- boats, making a total of 189. Ger many has 15 battle ships, 9 first-class cruisers, 9 second-class cruisers, 21 third-class cruisers, 13 port-defence vessels, and 134 torpedo-boats, a total of 201. France has 33 battle ships, 17 first-class cruisers, 30 sec- cond-class, cruisers, 108 third-class cruisers, 18 port-defense vessels and 130 topedo craft, making a total of 436. Italy has 12 battle-ships, 9 first-class cruisers, 16 second-class cruisers, 36 third-class cruisers, 4 port-defense vessels and 147 torpedo- boats, a total of 224. The United »States has 6 battle-ships, 7 first-class cruisers, 13 second-class cruisers, 21 third-class cruisers, 18 port-defense vessels and 3 torpedo-boats, a total of 68 warships. These figures in clude vessels on hand, ordered to be built or provided for. S.
