Now that the Oregon legislature is in session everybody will want to read a newspaper printed at Salem, the capital. They will want a paper that gives all the news. The Statesman is just such a pa per—bright, spicy, active, energetic, well edited. It reports the proceedings in detail every day, not overlooking a single item in either house. Your senatorsand rep resentatives were elected on a stated platform, pledged to carry out certain policies of reform. You will want to watch their course in the legislature and see whether or not they remained true to their pledges. The late sleet did considerable damage to the fruit trees in the vicinity of Mt. Novelty, many of them being broken down and entirely ruined. A number of our hop growers met in town yesterday to arrange for bringing suit against Herren & Levy, of Salem, for money due them on hops. The late high water is said to have cut a channel through Wm. Smith’s upper hop yard, destroying about one-third of the yard. A child of W. H. Wren, living on John Fouts’ place, is very sick with diphtheria. Mrs. Gist has been sick the past week with measles, but has now about recov ered.
