If the trouble can be located, as it is in this case, there is service done to the community, and the physician and sanitarian both feel that their profession has in a sense achieved a triumph. The locatiou of a trouble is more than half the cure. In the fever cases at Montclair a high measure of certainty is attain able. In brief, the known typhoid cases all occurred in individuals who had partaken of the milk. The ori gin of the disease is thus fixed about as certainly as is possible in such cases, and the outbreak so definitely limited may be taken as a tribute to the healtbfulness of general local conditions. The front stone was unmarked. The fire in the tabernacle is said to have originated from a spark from the electric stop of the organ. The organist was playing the instrument at the time and Dr. Talmage was ia the church. About 200 members of the congregation were also present. All escaped without injury, but Dr. Talmage himself had a narrow es cape. In an interview he said: “I was standing in front of the plat, form when the blaze was discovered. I urged the people standing around me to seek a place of safety. I walked up the steps to the platform and crossed over to my study. Af ter securing my hat and coat I started back, but as 1 reached the door 1 thought. Is it best for ine to go this way? ?’ ’ I concluded tochange iny route, and went out a rear door to Clinton avenue. Seeing that there was no immediate danger, I reeutered the church, and then learned that the organ pipes had fallen to the platform, Had I re- crossed the platform, as 1 at tirst intended, 1 would have been crushed by them. The loss on the church is not far short of $500,000, and that on the Hotel Regent, which was also burned, is placed at $850.000 by the manager, but this will be greatly in. creased by individual losses to the guests The furniture in the hotel cost from $200,000 to $250,000. The loss falls upon the Brooklyn Hotel Company. Apart from the tuber, nacle and the Hotel Regent, the damage will foot up over $50,000. Russell Sage who had a mortgage on the church for $125,0<)0 is insured, but offers the congregation an in definite period in which to pay the debt if they wish to rebuild. A less expensive building will be put up on a different site. Dr. Talmage started on Tuesday for a tour of the world.
