What we Believe’
The new Postal Notes are aaid to be
very popular, especially iu the Euateni
States. We arc glad to know that they
are popular somewnere ; the people of
this section don’t seem to have much
use for they. They hail rather pay a
trifle more for sending their money by
means whereby some safety is gunrtiu-
ieed.

The Register and Weston Leader have
formed a boomeration society to boom
Hon. W. D. Fenton, for Congress again.
Probably they think Hon. M. C. George
will be the next Senator, and that the
terrible Congressional snow stonns of
two years ago will not prevail. Judge,
you take the nomination if you want
to see how deep the snows of political
brimstone will fall on a free trader.

Among the recommendations iu con­
gress for continuing improvements to
rivers and harltors on the Pacific coast
are the following: Upper Columbia
river, $56,0v0; coustructiug canal
around the cascades of the Columbia
.liver, $500,000; lower Willamette
and Columbia rivers, $210,000; upper
Willamette, $31,000 : Chehalis river,
W. T.. $6,000; other rivers in W. T.,
$15,000; improving the mouth of Co-
qtulle river, Oregon, $60,000.

The Temperance Alliance of the
State of Oregon held an interesting ses­
sion at Portland last week, which was
largely attended from all parts of the
3tate. Much work was done. But the
bulk of the work can be summed up in
the following resolutions adopted by
that body:
Resolved, That we renew our pledges
never to cease, our work and labors un­
til the constitution of Oregon is so
amended as to foroverprohibitall kinds
and classes of intoxicating liquors as a
beverage within this state, aud to this
end we favor submitting to the Hectors
of this state at as early a day as prac­
ticable an amendment to the constitu­
tion providing for the entire prohibi­
tion of the manufacture, sale or giving
away, or offering to sell any intoxicat­
ing liquors whatever.
Resolved, That we favor the sub­
mission of said amendment at a special
election throughout the state.
And also the following supplemental
report which was adopted:
W hereas , The common foo against
which we are waging warfare is capable
of being assailed from many quarters,
therefore, l*i it
Resolved, That we cheerfully recog­
nize the good work accomplished by all
temperance workers, religotts or secu­
lar, uud iu view of the magnitude and
urgency of our work, we call upon all
workers to put forth stronger and more
persistent, efforts to completely over­
throw the giant evil of intemperance,
not suffering their zeal to subside with
the adjournment of this alliauco.
Resolved, That in tho press of the
sdate wo recognize a power second to
none iu moulding and shaping public
opinion, and cheerfully acknowledge
the fair, candid and outspoken course
pursued by many of our newspapers,
and ask a continued and increasing-
support from them.
Resolved, That we heartly approve
the employment of a lecturer and lec­
turers, anil pledge ourselves to support
them by our means.

POLITICAL RESOLUTIONS.
Resolved, That we will not vote for
uiiv legislative candidate who is known
tobe opposed to the submission of the
proposed prohibitory amendment.
The third resolution was adopted,
and the following, after long debate,
was adopted as a Substitute for the
fourth resolution:
Resolved, That in case both of the
prominent political parties, viz: the
democrats and republicans, nt their
next national convention to be held
this year, noth refuse to recognize the
< laiiiin of the temperance peojde ol
lids country, iu demanding the passage
of prohibitory platforms, we will assert
our rights to sever our connections
with those parties aud support the can
didates of the National Home Protec­
tion Prohibition party, aud our execu­
tive committee is hereby authorized to
use their discretion in calling a meet- 1
ingofthis alliance immediately after ’
the adjournment of those conventions 1
to accomplish that purpose.
