The Northern Pacific Railroad pays taxes in Yakima county to the amount of f6522.60. A dastardly attempt was made to burn a warehouse and planing mill at Dayton,W. T., on the evening of the 23rd. Young Finlayson, wh® is charged with killing his grandmother, and in jail at Albany, has a good appetite and sleeps well. Mrs. Dan Drumheller, of Spokane Falls, claims to be the first lady to vote iu Npokane Falls. In the Kootenai mining district, $8(1,(HR) and a quartz ledge changed hands last week. Mrs. R'ggs, of Jackson county, Oregon, lost sixty-five cows by drown ing during the late freshet. The Sheriff of King countv would like to lay hands on Stafford McCloud He is wanted for forgery. A company has been organized in Harrisburg, Oregon for the purpose of sending men to the Cœur d’Alene mines. All the buildings on the water front at Seattle are being demolished to make room for the Puget Sound Short Line Railway. The quarrel between Temperance Brothers Woodcock and King, has smashed the unity of that organiza tion in Linn county. Harmony is for sale cheap. A tree was recently cut in the mountains near Palouse City, which measured as follows: circumference at top of stump, 16 feet 7 inches; scaled, 14,702 feet of lumber. The Goldendale Gazette says: If $10,000 were brought to Goldeodale to morrow it could all be loaned in sums oi from $100 to $500 within a week at from 12 to 18 per cent, with undoubted security. Work on Ainsworth bridge is con tinued night and day. The iron frame work of two spans has been erected and the supporting timber work has been removed. The last pier is well on towards completion. A man by the name of James Hardman, living in the northern part of Grant county, was so badly frozen two days before New Years, that his legs had to be amputated just below the knees. He had an uncle residing at Prairie City. The Walla Walla Union of the 22nd inst. says: Martin, the prison er confined in the city jail who re fused to work on the streets, still keeps up his diet of bread and water He has already served 17 days out of his sentence of 25 days. .Sand Point is now making a move to capture the trade and travel going to and from the Coeur d’Alene mines says the Walla Walla Union. A steamer is to be put on Lake Pend d’Orielle to run from Sand Point to a landing 38 miles up the lake near the old steamboat landing. Wheat never looked finer at this season of the year, says the Albany Democrat, and as one farmer expies sed it, " you cannot sec the ground.” If it is allowed to mature without any backsets, the farmers of Linn Co. will harvest the largest crop ever raised in the country, which will mean greater prosperity and better times.
