R eportkh The decade meeting of th) Yamhill County Woman Suffrage A hso - ointion met on la*t Wednesday evening at L» fayette. and Littlefield's Hall was crowded with eager listeners. Mrs. 8. M. Kelty called th a meeting to order, stating the object ot th is body and its working fur the p<ud ten years. The Lafayette Choral Society opened the programme of the evening, and furnished m tsic at intervals during the exercises.— This society deserves more comment than space permits, save that it added much inter est to the meeting. Mrs. H. A. Loughary, of McMinnville, was introduced for a short speech, since long ones could not be tolerated because so many desired to speak. Mrs. Irene Galbreath followed with a very logical essay of reasons why unrepresented woman is demanding the ballot. Mr. A. Hurley was next on the programme, and was given a half-hour to view the ques tion from a legal standpoint ; he gave the origin and theory of suffrage, said man was once without it and showed by historical re search how circumstances, changes and de velopments gave men this privilege, and that circumstances and changes in society and the civil governmet suggested and demanded as an act of justice the same for woman. Hon. W. D. Fenton was next called for and readily responded with one of the most logical pleas for woman's enfranchisement we seldom bear, and yet he is free to state that he is not sufficiently convinced of its expediency to pledge his vote next June for the “ Amendment,” but like a true, honest and loyal man, opens his mind to conviction. He stated in a very impressive manner the fact that his sister in W. T. is a voter, and seven brothers in Oregon soon will be voters, while his mother who bore them all, and his estimable wife were not voters, and that in such differences there seemed some thing wrong. We venture this, that no man who has such a high regard for his mother, wife and sister, and is not afraid to express it, can be other than a friend to woman's cause, tho' his mind is not yet made up. Mrs. Eva Loughary next gave a reading— ,l Rock me to sleep. Mother”—in such an easy and pathetic manner as to meet with general applause. Following this came one of Mrs. M. F. Cooke’s earnest appeals to Yamhill voters for a candid and just consideration of our claims. Other brief speeches were made by Judge Townsend, Mrs. Jacobs and others when the meeting was forced to adjourn on account of the lateness of the hour. After a parody on “Marching through Georgia,” by the Choral society.the audience dispersed, but by a little strategy on the part of a friend we were made to halt at the door by a surprise serenade by the Lafayette band, which called out a response from the under signed, noting the change of sentiment in a few years when coming out of a meeting of the kind, the leaders were met with sneers, paper wads, mud balls, eggs, etc., and now it is everywhere sweet strains of music, which with its elevating influences always awakens kind feelings. At a business meeting the following morn ing a vote of theanks was tendered the La fayette Choral Society, the band, the “Ore gon Register” and the Y amhill R eporter for favors. M rs . Ht r remains wi!‘ b. buried at lo o'clock this after: x»n. fu neral service to take place at too residence, [wore extended notice next week.] Matilda, beloved wife of William Burch field, died near this place on Monday, Jan. 21st, 1884, after an illness of about one week. Mr. Burchfield and family came to this place about a month ago. and went into camp just across Cozine Creek, south of town, living tn a teat, and were known as the “Gypsies,” the deceased being an expert in fortune tell ing. She wits aged 6o years, and leaves a husband and three children, who leave for their home in California, to-day. The b» - reaved husband wishes to expr< ss his thanks for the kind treatment received from the cit izens of this place during their dire affliction and that such kindnesses uill always be re membered by him and his. The remains of deceased were laid away to rest in Masonic Cemetery on Tuesday last. Notice to I he 1’iabicc.
