TOPICS OF THE DAY
Portland's plaza is infested with
Canada thistles.
Burglaries are becoming numer­
ous taroughout the State.
There is a gap of 120 miles in the
N. P. R. R. track yet to be closed.
Hon. M. C. George will deliver the
oration at a celebration at Gervais,on
the 4th.
John Zogg, aged 19, was drowned
while bathing in the Willamette at
Portland, on Sunday.
Wm. Scott, of Mitchell, Wasco
county, fell from a loaded wagon and
received injuries that proved fatal last
week.
R. W. Cannon, the man who shot
Senator Vorhees of Marion county, a
few days since was arrested in Doug­
las county last week and lodged in
the Marion county jail.
Standard: They have a young la­
dies’cornet band at The Dalles. Well
they have as good right to make night
hideous for ten blocks around as men.
Hurray for them, so we say, or words
to that effect.
Statesman: We have made in­
quiry of farmers from all parts of the
county, and from what we can learn
the fruit crop will be light compared
with former years, particularly is this
the case with the pear crop, which
has always been in former years very
prolific, but this year in some orch­
ards it is an entire failure, while but
few orchards will yield the usual
crop. Prunes, too, have suffered very
much, so that the yield will not ex­
ceed more than half the usual amount.
The apple crop will be much lighter
than usual, while there will be plenty
of fruit for home consumption. We
doubt very mach if there will be
much of a surplus to ship. There
will not be the thousands of bushels
of apples and pears left in the orch­
ards to rot this fall that has been for
many years past, for two reason : 1st,
the crop is much lighter than usual,
and 2nd, the country is filling up verv
rapidly and the demand for home con­
sumption is much greater than it has
ever been before. And unless there
are more orchards planted, soon the
fruit crop will be short in the future.
Farmers must take better care of
their orchards in the future than they
have in the past, for as soon as the
Northern Pacific Railroad is complet­
ed, our fine fruit will find a ready
market in the Eastern States at very
remunerative prices.
