Tbe team of this city is said to be the best in the state. death on the rails . THE STATE'S MONEY. AMERICAN PLUCK. MINERAL WEALTH, Jack Harfcaeu KIIM by Train No. > on Fri X day Last. Jack Harkness, a laborer who has been working in this section of tbe country for mme year*, lately in _ the , —. ----- „ employ of Mr. Waddle, near Amity, cuiue to this city Friday morning and proceeded to take on a jag. He was not so very drunk when he started up the railroad track toward Amity aliout one o'clock. Persons who saw him at that time said the sidewalk was just wide enough for him. He was last seen ou college side walking in the middle of the track. The afternoon train ar rived here somewhat late and the en gineer reported to the coroner that he had run over and killed a man upon the trestle about one and one-holf miles south of this city. This trestle is in the neighborhood of twenty feet high and one hundred feet long. He stated that the person killed was lying down be tween the rails the body apparently be tween the ties and it was impossible for him to see it soon enough to stop the train before striking IL As soon as be bad made it out he reversed the en gine and put on the brake* but tbe train passed over the person before it stopped. A large crowd went out with the coroner to view the Ixxly. The sup position is that when Harkness reach ed the trestle he was in a drunken stu por and either fell or lay down and then went to sleep, thinking nothing of the train. Me was about twenty feet from the south end of the trestle when struck and was thrown or rolled aliout the same distance by the train toward this city. The body was horri bly cruslied and mangled. The upper part of the breast and neck was a pulp to which the head dangled by a few shreds of *inew and skin. The top of the head was cruslied and a large piece of tile skull and all the brains had fall en into the mud and water below the trestle. The backlione was broken and the body was practically disemlioweled, pieces of the intestines, liver aud stom ach being scattered from the place where the train had stiuck him to the point of rest. The clothing was torn and covered with blood and a more horrible sight could not be imagined. One side of tlie face was crushed and mangled beyond recognition while the other was without a bruise. In the pockets was found small change to the amount of 31.90 ffnd below, in the mud was found a quart bottle of whisky, un opened and unbroken. This had ap parently fallen from the pocket when struck. Saturday morning the coroner’s jury rendered a verdict to tbe effect that the man had been killed by Southern Pa cific train No. 2. No blame is attached to the engineer by the jury, but it might be well to state that this same engineer, Jas. Keho, struck and killed Mr. Bell near Amity some time ago. Mr. Macrum, of the railroad commis sion, was here Saturday taking evi dence. but so far as appearances went he did not do much and his work sa vored more of the railroad company than it did of the people. After the hotly was brought to tills city a more careful search of his cloth ing brought to light a purse containing $35 in gold. Harkness having no rela tives in this country the money was used in paying the expenses of inter ment. The body was dressed and placed in a neat coffin and buried in tlie Masonic cemetery on Saturday.
