It will embrace the west side of Benton county, beginning at short tunnel No. 2 on the O. I*, road, and also some of Tillamook, aud it is claimed will have a population of 4000. Toledo will lie temporary and probably the permanent county sent. The La Grande Gazette is cruel enough to perpetrate the following: “A maiden fair with sun-kissed Hair, came tripping down the street; tlie air was keen, her age was "steen,” lint gee- whiz! wasn't she sweet? The sidewalk was slick and she went down quick, with a jolt that took out her curls, ami the words she used must be excused, lor she's one of our best girls.” The Union Pacific have published a very neat pictorial World’s Fair folder, containing colored lithographs of the various exposition buildings, bird’s eye view of the grounds, with a complete map of the city, showing location of the fair, hotels, railway depots, street car linesandeity parks. Copy of the same may I® had by addressing W. H. Hurlburt, Assistant General Passenger Agent, Portland, Or. Mrs. Mary J. Lee, of Bellevue, Idaho arrived here Monday morning. She is a sister of Mrs. W. E. Warren of this city. The sisters have not met since 1844, when Mrs. Warren left Missouri for Oregon. Mrs. Lee has been a res ident of Idaho since 1861, and upon the death of her husband a few months ago she determined to see her sister. Two other sisters are alive; one living near Portland, the other in Oakland, Cal. Young men who on marriage l®nt, hie themselves away to the county seat to get tlie necessary license, should remember that they must have a. wit ness to satisfy the clerk that the pros pective bride is of proper age; lie can not take tlie say-so of tlie applicant, the law prohibits it. Every day or two some young man from a distant part of the county will enter the clerk’s office and in a confidential tone tell the official in charge that he wants a mar riage license. When told that a wit ness is necessary, tlie majority are bad- ly broken up, and once in a while tlie young num has to return home with- out the coveted permit. Our Poor Sidewalk*. The production of Humbug by the Cordray-Wass dramatic company was somewhat hauq®red by the unfortu nate accident to Miss Ida Burroughs, one of the actresses of the company. The company arrived on tlie morning freight from I ndependenee and were on their way up town when the accident occurred. Miss Burroughs was walk ing with another lady and in front of Mrs. Butler’s residence on Second street a plank in the sidewalk was elevated by the step of iier companion and Miss Burroughs caught her foot in the open ing thus made and fell, breaking lioth bones of the right leg lietween the an kle and knee. l)r. H. A. Young was called and the leg set. While the frac ture is not a serious one the young lady will sutler and lie idle for at least two months. She was taken to Portlund on the afternoon train and a Miss Lin coln who was traveling with the com pany was substituted. Considering the short notice Miss Lincoln did remarka bly well and the entertainment was not marred to the extent of notice. A damage suit will in nil probability be brought against tlie city and while the maximum damage according to the charter is $100, some of our attorneys seem to think that more can lie obtain ed if the matter is pressed to a finish. One thing is certain, the city should pay at least the amount of doctor bill and salary lost through the accident. Someone is to blame, and In tlie light of past events and the loose manage ment of city aflalrs by the citizens through the councils elected, it is un doubtedly the city. The city will have to brace up soon and do something or there will more than amount to the cost of the necessary improvement. It»-aily for Spriaff Business. Knapp, Burrell A Co., at their pluce of business oil Third street, have been making some decided Improvements in Die urrangements of their salesroom and office. A new light and commo dious office lias been built at the front and right as you enter the store. The former office is used as a harness room. Agricultural implements of every de scription for spring trade are arrang ed to be shown to the customer to the best (wssil ile advantage. This stock is composed of every machine and imple ment used on the farm or in the gar den, and are all of the highest grade. Knapp, Burrell A Co. have been in business on the northwest coast a good many years; their methods and busi ness standing are well known. Mr. E. N. Ford, the local manager, is very well pleased with the past yeur’s busi ness, and now tliat he bus with him Mr. N. E. Kegg, a gentleman who bus been with the firm at other places for some time, he is better prepared than ever to serve farmers in this line. Mr. Kegg is a very pleasant gentleman and the firm’s many friends are invited to call and make his acquaintance. Pacific Coast Hop*. The Product Exchange Reporter of Chicago, has the following to say about Pacific coast hops. Washington, Ore gon and California combined produce two-fifths of the hop output of the United States, and each year sees an additional acreage, although last season the crop was somewhat short. Now, however, the hop raisers think they have a cinch on the louse and pro[®se to harvest u big yield next season. In 1890 there were 42,736 bales grown. In 1891 there were 34,026 bales shipped by Washington against Oregon* 7420 bales. The record of 1892 was about the same. Last year Washington ship|>ed 13,366 bales against 7529 sent out by Oregon. Germany sets the ]>ace in price and last fall neglected the Pacific crop and growers were correspondingly disgust ed, expecting high prices. The market ranges from 13 to 18 cents |ier pound. The Pacific coast states have the best soil in the world and an admirable cli mate for raising hops and there Is no apparrent reason why these states may not out-distance all competitors in lioth quality and quantity. A Small Appropriation. The Oivgonean learns that from pres ent indications there will be but little done in this country for the next year or so In the way of surveying public lands, The umount of the appropria tion for Illis purfiose included in the general appropriation Kill now liefore congress is only $160,000 as compared to $400,000 lust year. ('ongressmaii Herman moved toumend by inserting $869,955, but the amendment was lost, as was also an amendment moved by Wilson of Washington to insert $200,- 000. Out of tlie $100,000 tlie sum of $30,000 Is set aside for examination for surveys. (Iregon’s share of last year’s appropriation was $20,000 and on tlie same basis her share for this year will be less than (MMl This wiil not go far in surveying public lands in Ore gon and Svrveyor- General Byars is looking forward to a quiet time next summer. The only hope is that when the bill goes to the senate it will ¡II- crease tlie appropriation. Fossil Coal Field*. Last week we thought Chas. Miller, the coal miner, reticent aliout giving us definite information concerning the work at the cool mines, and so we have found the following: A tunnel was commenced down the steep hill 800 feet from the north opening of the mines (the one highest on the mountain this side of where Mr. Peterson lives) and about halfway between that opening and the one neur the base of the moun tain. Mr. Miller concluded that if the strata of coal was regular and contin uous, this tunnel would strike it at 420 feet, and that the quality would be likely to improve. We ascertained that the tunnellers reached tlie vein as ex pected at tlie distance of 420 feet, and that the dip of tlie vein is the same as nt tlie upper opening, but tlie quality is superior to any coal mined on tlie Pacific coast. 'Die st rata of coal ill this vein measures about thirteen feet in a perpendicular cross section. This proves n good deal, and ought to convince the most skeptical person that these coal mines are valuable property.— Journal. I « A ULKA FOB GAME BIBDI. The Bolt NEWS RETOLD. These birds have been liberated on the farms of T. J. Now, here is your chance to kill u nice lot of valuable birds. They have cost me aliout one dollar apiece aad besides are the nicest eating little birds iu America. Get out your guns and start at once for these happy hunting grounds and whenever you sec a Bob White sitting on a fence post calling to his mate, crawl along carefully and take good aim so as to be sure that this poor for eigner shall have no foothold in our domain. If you happen to miss him, never mind. Mark him down and fol low until you have liim, either from a well directed shot or from pure exhaus tion. Then be sure, very sure, and bring him to me, as 1 will gladly give five dollars each for all such birds now killed, and if you persist I will give you more. When you have them all killed, kindly let me know and 1 will furnish you more birds next winter as there is no reason why in this way we should not have plenty of birds tlie year through. To all true sportsmen and the farm ers in general, 1 would simply say, give the birds n chanc», and when occasion requires, u few handsful of wheat will Help much towards producing in our midst an abundance of these, the finest of American game birds.
