Squire left yesterday for Iowa, where she will visit for a short time and then return, bringing her mother with her. A grandson of Geo. Myers of Newberg was sent to the rqform school at Salem ” ednesday. He threatened the life of his grandfather and was incorrigible. This makes two from Yamhill county. The supervisors of the road districts in the county reBder a monthly report of their work to the county court. We are sure of good roadA now if the coun ty commissioners are liberal in appro priations for tools. Why not have the houses in this city numbered? Why not have the names of the streets diaplayed on the corners. Why not do a number of things to make the city look like a city? Let the council grind. M. O. Lonsdale, of Lafayette, has a large covered park and in it several pair of Mongolian pheasants roam. In another enclosure be has a pair of the beautiful golden pheasants. He intends to raise a number if possible. The birds are a pretty sight. A. L. Aiderman, of Tillamook, has been appointed deputy collector oi cus toms for Tillamook bay and has lieen ordered to Astoria to take oath and re ceive instructions. The appointment is a good one and gives general satisfac tion to the residents of Tillamook. There are several daily papers in Ore gon. Portland three, Astoria three, Sa lem two, The Dalles two, Albany two, Baker City two, Eugene one. ’ There are about 100 altogether. Of these but three—the Astorian, the Oregonian and the Salem Statesman have morning press report. Mrs. Helen Hartford, of Newberg, late state organizer and lecturer of the W. C. T. U. for Missouri, delivered an able and entertaining address at Carl ton, on Monday last. She will speak at the Christain church in this city on Tuesday evening, March 15th., at 7.30 p. m. Admission free. J. C. Cooper, postmaster, is making preparations to refit the pos toftice with new bronze front lock boxes. In all 405 boxes will be put in making it the neatest office in the state. The office will lie refitted and no part of the present of fice will be left. They are the Acme box made at Camden, New Jersey. Friday night Mr. Dickinson, the ex pressman, while scuffling with T. A. Turner, slipped and fell, breaking both bones of his left leg near the ankle. It is a serious break and will be some time before he will be able to be out. He is doing well however, and his many friends hope to see him out with all his old time spirits. The actions of DeWitt McDuffey dur ing the past two weeks have been such that the directors of the school found it necessary to expel him. A youngster that cannot be made to come to time I at school should be sent to the re I form school at Salem. It is not like a prison but is a reformatory and dis ' grace should not be attached to it. CAN IT BB DONE? ANOTHER SCHOOL HOUSE. If it Can, the Matter Should he Com The Citizens Vote the Erection of One to menced at Once. Cost Not Less Than *10,000. Monday the editor received the com munication which is printed below: J unction C ity , O on ., Mar. 7, 1892. Dear Sir:—We are reasonably assured that if we can offer the Southern Pa cific twenty or twenty-five thousand dollars as a bonus they can lie induced to extend the west side line from Cor vallis to J unction City during the pres ent year. As this would give you a through line and be of great importance to your city and vicinity we ask you to assist us in raising this amount. We have nearly $10,000 subscribed now. Call a meeting at once and put the list in the hands of some of your best men. Get subscription on the condition no road, no pay. If you want a committee from here, so advise. Do all you can and as soon as possible. C. W. L amson , Sec. Board of Trade. There is no doubt that the opening of the road through to Junction would be of vast benefit to the towns along the line. If the Southern Pacific will say in so many words that the line will lie built for a certain bonus it would not take long to raise it. It would be a good thing for the board of trade of this city to look this matter up and corre spond with the board at Junction. When that gap is filled up the through trains will probably run on the west side. This road has long been wanted and if there is a chance to close the gap an effort should he made to do It. The Junction City Times says of this subject: “This is a matter in which every citizen should be interested, and if the proper effort is made and all work in harmony and each one do his whole duty, trains will be running from the west side before January 1st next. There is no use in consoling our selves with the thought that the road will be built anyway, for it won’t. It is true that the right of way has already been purchased, but the company don't have to build the road unless that terri tory is threatened by the invasion of another company. A long pull and a strong pull and a pull altogether will bring it. Let us pull.” The Road Supervisors. The road supervisors of this county are taking a great interest in their work and a large amount is be ing done. Mr. Macy it is said takes the cake for the largest amount of work done, but he wins it because he has had the use of a row I grader while the others have used the ancient tools of the county. All the supervisors unite to requesting that the county furnish each district with a road grader and a heavy roller. Yesterday we had a conversation with Mr. Gee, Mr. Col lard and Mr. Waddle on the matter of roads and they are enthusiastic over the new system. Now let the county court be liberal in the matter of fur nishing tools and we will guarantee that the citizens of this county will not complain at the badness of the roads next winter. If the county hampers the efforts of these gentle men it takes dollars from the pockets of every resident of this county and par ticularly from the pockets of the farm ing community. Two hundred of the legal voters of this school district assembled at the Opera house Monday for the purpose of deciding whether or not a new school house should be built. The result of the meeting is entirely satisfactory to everyone, and this city will be graced with another school house to cost not less than $10,000 and not more than $14,000. The tax levied for the year was seven mills and the district was oidered boud- ed for ¡$7000 for a period of fifteen years There was considerable skirmishing on these questions, several attempting to arrive at the above conclusions, but by different ways. The election of directors was the first thing on the programme, and T. A. Turner was elected. The big fight was made on school clerks, Jos. Hoberg aud D. Caldwell being the candidates. Caldwell led all the time and upon the third ballot was elected. Mr. Hoberg died hard, however, and stated to the voters assembled that he had been de feated because of an honest assessment. He is wrong to this matter. He prob ably thinks as be stated, but the people think that he was not fair in his assess ment and a majority decides whether or not matters are fair or honest. The majority can make an act of philan thropy a crime if it sees fit to do so. The city now has better educational facilities than any other town in the state, Portland not excepted. Masquerade Prir.es. The prizes offered for the best COS- tumes and characters at the masquer ade on next Thursday night, are the finest ever been given in this city. For the best ladies' costume Rogers Bros, give a handsome morocco dres sing case containing everything neces sary for the preparation of a toilet. The value of this is $8.50. It is not a cheap affair as one look will assure you. Chas. Grissen gives a very beatiful dressing case for the best sustained lady character. The value of this hand some prize is $8. For the best dressed gentleman B Co. will give a $5 split bamboo fishing pole. For the best sus tained gentleman character Kay & Todd offer a costly gold headed silk umbrella. To the fishing pole the Union hard ware company adds a fine rubber reel, valued at $2.50. O. O. Hodson gives a large willow fishing basket valued at $1.50. This makes a complete fishing outfit for the best dressed gentleman, worth $9. These prizes are now displayed in Rogers Bros, show window and their excellence is causing many remarks. As They See it. Death Has its Pleasure. Just a word to congressional aspir ants. A man takes his life In his own hands when he goes to congress these days. The mortality among congress men exceeds that of any other class, and the sick list is on the increase every day. And yet there are 400 statesmen in Oregon who have the courage to risk their lives by going to congress if only the dear people would consent— Telegram. And the Strings are Pulled. A correspondent innocently asks if Binger Hermann is a jumping-jack for the Southern Pacific, Why, bless your soul, Hermann Binger has more strings on him than can be counted ou the fingers of the two hands. Mr. Her mann’s chief qualification is that he is the subservient tool of the corporations and we would like to see a man get the republican nomination who is not.— Telegram. No, Not Quite. The campaign liar lias started out on his quadrennial crusade. Our New York dispatches to-day give a purport ed interview with David B. Hill, in which he is quoted as saying, “he did not know the democrats had any pol icy.” It is not necessary for Mr. Hill to deny the interview. No one but a fool would make such a statement, and even Mr. Hill’s worst enemies have never accused him of lieing a fool.— Telegram. Brother Bell for a Starter. There are no liars to Oregon, You can’t find a mail willing to agree with you if you call him a liar. In Utah, however, it is different to some extent. Not content with a claim of 106 bushels of wheat per acre, they now bring forth a sheep from which was clipped sixty seven pounds of wool “at one sitting”. To be able to compete with Utah we must either improve the breed of our sheep or raise a crop of liars.— West Side. Now Wishing he Had. Janies G. Blaine is a great states man and diplomat.
