Wednesday night some miscreant abused this privilege by going in after Mr. Wiscarver had’ left the office, and kicking one of the draw ers to pieces. It was utterly demolished, no two pieces of it being lelt together, and the fragments were thrown through into the inner otlice. One or two other boxes just above the drawer received their share of the kicks and were sprung from the binges. The drawer was not locked and what the motives were for destroying it cannot be imagined. It was certainly a very low piece of work, ami is liable to cost the perpetrator con siderable trouble. A mitten was picked up on the South Yamhill road yesterday and left at this office. It can be had by the owner by calling here and proving property. Several valuable pieces of real estate are offered for sale in this issue of the T zlefhone . Whoever first takes advan tage of the offers will secure bargains. Holiday Goods are going off like hot cakes at Geo. W. Judge Boise is engaged in hearing at chambers, at the court house, the case of James Shirley vs. II. C. Birch, M. E. Campbell, J. A. Stratton, etal., which commenced Monday in the forenoon, and was concluded yesterday. This is a suit to foreclose a mortgage made in the name of Joseph Chandler for $2,500, which Mr. Shirley claims to own as as signee from Chandler; the defendants claiming that Chandler is a fictitious person, and that their lions bv judge ment, which are subsequent in point of date against Birch, are superior as against Shirley, for the reason that a mortgage made to a fictitious person is void as against them. The defendants claim in fact, as the case is presented to the court, that a mortgage made to a fic titious person is void because there was no real person to accept of it, and conse quently that there was no person in esse to deliver it to Mr. Shirley. Spriggs & Richardson appear for the plaintiff, and Tilmon Ford and \Y. M. Ramsey appear for the defendants. This case tilings to light some more of the crooked ways in which E. J. Dawne loaned other people’s money. Tlie Judge’s decision will probably not be rendered in the case until the March term of the circuit court for Yamhill county, and whichever way it is decided it will more than likely be ap pealed to tlie supreme court for a final decision of the questions involved.— Statesman 29. I ailed to C onvict .—Ilibbs, the former postmaster at Lewiston, who accumulat ed a small fortune by means of forged money orders, lias bad another trial, and again lias the jury failed to convict. The case was tried in the United States court for the northern district of Idaho, in Lewiston, before Judge Norman Buck and a Lewiston jury. The trial began on the 14th and lasted nearly two weeks. The prosecution was conducted bv Col. James Hawley, U. S. district attorney, and his deputy, A. Quackenbush. The defense was in the hands of Frank Ga irahl and I. N. Maxwell, and a strong and effective fight was made for the de fendant. The jury hung, and was dis charged. It is hard to tell whether Religious Services-Sunday Next. Hibbs will be tried again or not. C ounty L ines .—Following we pub lish the proposed boundary between the counties of Yamhill and Tillamook for the benefit of parties living near that boundary, so (hat it may be corrected and made satisfactory before being pre- ■ented to the legislature : Beginning at the section corner between sections 4 and 5 on the township line between 'ownships 1 and 2 south, range 6 west; thence soutji, following section lines to the township line between townships 3 and 4 south; thence west 5 m.les on township hne ; thence south 3 miles to section coiner in centre of township; thence west ten miles on section lines; thence south on section lines to intersect south boundary of county. A map silowing the proposed boundary may be seen at this offee. F ingers M ashed .—Yesterday morn ing a 14-year-old son of Ira Hutchins, formerly of Yamhill, but now of eastern Oregon, who has been working for John Fletcher, met with a bad accident. lie was turning a chopper when his hand slipped and the two middle fingers of liis right hand were caught in the cogs and terribly mashed. He was brought to town and Dr. Calbreath attended him. One finger was amputated at the first joint. The other had the nail and flesh torn off, but as the boue was not broken the Dr. hopes to not have to amputate that. The little fellow stood the opera tion like a major, without taking any anasthetic, and is getting along nicely. C lean them off .—Isn’t there a law somewhere amongst the o-dtnances passed by the city council, compelling people to keep the walks clear in front of their respective places of business. If there is let’s hunt it up and enforce it, and if there is not, can’t we have one passed to that effect? It’s a nuisance to go stumbling around these dark nights running against an obstruction of some kind every little way. The first tiling we know we’ll have a big damage suit against the city, and it will cost, us something. Such things have been known to happen and as prevention is better than cure, lets have the rubbish removed from our walks. I Elsia Wright tells us he has purchased A C uriosity .—J. J.
