? V I l ICHT 1 FRIDAV, APRIL 15. 193« THE BONNEVILLE DAM CHRONICLE To Confer On Rate Making 18 The Federal Power Commission at W ashington, D. C. announced th at beginning Monday, April 18, the ad visory board of the Bonneville Dam will m eet with A dm inistrator J. D. Ross in Portland for the purpose of cooperating with the adm inistrator in devising a rate schedule. The board consisting of Col. T. M. Robins of the Army Engineers, R oger B. M cW horter of the Federal Pow er Commission, A. G. Selby of the D epartm ent of Agriculture, and F ran k Banks of the Reclam ation Service will go over the rate sched ule already set up by Ross. Once approved by them the schedule will be sent east or perhaps taken east by Mr. Ross. Here the Federal Pow er Commission will check it once again and announce it to the wor.ld. It is expected th at the rates now will be announce^ around the first of May. The local advisory board will probably not take very long in its analysis and then the Federal Pow er Commission should not take too long since one of their men a t tended all of the hearings held by R o s s throughout the Northwest. A nother m eipber of this federal com mission has been working up till the past week in connection with R oss’ office in Portland. Ju st how the area will fare in the rates scram ble rem ains to be seen. Much has been said for and against J. D. Ross since he has taken this office of adm inistrator. To date nothing but words have been the basis of judging the plans of Ross. And m any times, we are informed, Mr. Ross has been misquoted. The fun will begin in earnest when the rates are announced. will ‘help all the people of the region without unduly favoring any one lo cality or discrim inating against any other.’ PubUc D istricts Favored “ Under the law signed by the president I am directed to give pref erence in the sale of Bonneville power to public districts. State m ents th at the president is opposed to such districts are contrary to fact. He wishes districts and cities to have first chance to distribute electricity from Bonneville. However, the peo ple m ay choose any agency they wish, public or private.” A dm inistrator Ross’ statem ent was made on the eve of the seven-county public utility district election. TELEPH O N E TAXES HIGH Total taxes of The Pacific Tele phone and T elegraph Company in Oregon on its operations in 1937 were $1,226,659, or an average of $9.04 per telephone for the year—more than 75c per m onth. The total 1937 taxes were the highest in history for the Company in Oreggon. This w as m ade knu«<i this week by the company, with the paym ent to the Hood R iver County tax col lector of $2,986.83 for real and per sonal property taxes, with the dis count for prom pt paym ent.
