The Church Serves the Community Through Moral I'plift (Following is another of the lenten articles, written by Hood River Val ley churchmen) In the face of the world’s confus ion and conflict, we proclaim an un shaken confidence in the world mis sion of Christianity and her great institution—the Church. Since the Day of Pentecost, the birthday of its organization, the Church has sought to lift the moral standards of the world. They came into a society, not so much endang ered by poisonous gases as by poi sonous Ideas and Ideals. Historians tell us that when Christ was four years old a father wrote to his wife these words: ‘ ‘If you have given birth to a boy, give him good care; if it is a girl, dispose of her.” In the Roman empire when a boy was bom—he would be ushered from the delivery room to the father for in spection. He would often work the child’s legs and arms to see whether they would work well. If he did not Howe Electric Co. Hood River. Then the church took the message o f Christ sitting in the midst of them saying: “ Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for to such be ongeth tne kingdom of Heaven.” From that day the church has pushed back the low moral standards of ancient childhood and thousands of Orphan ages, home and abroad is mute ev idence of the Church’s jealous care for their moral welfare. In Ancient Roman days there would be cities with a population of 450.000 out of which would come only 45.000 freemen. As Christianity pen etrated the pagan world, won its converts, human slavery disap peared. Even in England and Amer ica the long struggle against slavery is a story of the Church arousing its citizenship against this immoral evil. The Church is not merely to teach Christian fundamentals, or to bring people into a building to wor ship God, but to make Christ’s phil osophy of life known to the ends of the earth, and to PROTEST AND FIGHT ANY SYSTEM THAT IS CONTRARY TO HIS GREAT TEACHINGS OF HUMAN WORTH AND WORLD BROTHERHOOD.. Hence the historic fight against the liquor traffic, the madness of modem warfare, and gambling. A Church that is afraid to protest against moral wrongs is spineless and useless for moral uplift. Mil lions of lives are demoralized by the influence o f liquor. Countless thousands become prey to the gamb ling for unearned riches—and whole nations are threatened by modem warfare. Moral, social and physical bondage results from these evils. Marshal Haig’ s words to the church es becomes very timely and chal lenging. “ The business of the Church is to make my business im possible.” So the Church has de clared war on double standards. A Standard for the individual and an other for the state will never per manently endure. It is not the bus iness of the Church to tell the state and private business how to run their affairs, but it is her prerog ative to act as a leven, and apply breaks against any abuses to human ity which will involve the lowering of the moral standards and create suf fering. It is the philosophy of the church that ultimately society must be coperative rather than competi tive, nationally and internationally. For this reason the church main tains Sunday Schools to inculcate the teachings of Christ; slum mis sions to salvage broken lives; Col leges and Universities to train a new Christian leadership; hospitals, or phanages and Old People’s Homes to meet physical needs; and countless missionary schools to bring Chris- tion ethics and moral standards to the most backward races on the planet. In spite of all the criticisms heard in pullman cars, lounging rooms, on ocean liners, about the shortcomings of the Church, it is, nevertheless, the only institution and the best one God has at the present time to win the world to Himself and to decency, cooperation and justice. County Places Second in Seal Contest ♦ Hood River County was awarded second place in the state Christmas Seal contest at the 23rd Annual Con ference of the Oregon Tuberculosis Association held in The Dalles Fri day and Saturday. Sherman County with a rating of 12 sales per capita, was awarded first prize with Hood River a close sec ond, having 11.8 sales per capita. No second prize was scheduled to be awarded so that the beautiful map of the globe surrounded by seals of all nations which was awarded to the local group as second prize was quite a surprise. The award was compiled and given by Mrs. Pearl McCalman of Portland. This is a permanent trophy. Even though Hood River County only took second pize, it topped all of its own previous efforts by a con siderable amount. Among the Hood River delegation was Leslie Butler, who is one of the two living persons who served as state directors and helped to organ ize the Christmas seal movement in Oregon 23 years ago. Mrs. Percy Manser was elected State Director from Hood River County. Those attending from Hood River County were: Mrs. Armas Jakku, president; Mrs. A. B. Bennett, vice- president ; Mrs. P. L.
