In e a rly tim es the M uskingum and T u sc a ra w a s riv e rs and th e ir v alleys w e re known only as th e M uskingum . W hen the p ioneers c a m e the n a m e T u sc a ra w a s w as given to all th a t portion betw een the dividing rid g es in S u m m it county and the town of Coshocton, w here the W alhonding r iv e r joins the T u sc a ra w a s to fo rm th e M uskingum . T he origin of the tric k y n a m e of T u sc a ra w a , w hich now re p re se n ts a riv e r, county, and village in the sa m e county h a s long fu rn ish ed h is to ria n s a su b je c t for re s e a rc h .
