AUGUST «, INI. 4-H Members Make Plans For Contest THE GROWTH OF SEED INDUSTRY IN OREGON REVEALED The growing of seed crops is rap idly becoming an important and prof itable phase of Oregon agriculture, with the income from this source bringing a total of $3,000,000 to Ore gon in 1936. Facts recently compiled by E. R. Jackman, extension specialist in farm crops at O. S. C., for use in a pro gram service series compiled by J. R. Beck, extension specialist, shows for instance, that Oregon produces 100 per cent of the common and Hungar ian vetch seed, 100 per cent of the chewings fescue seed, and 100 per cent of the English and Italian rye grass seed used in the United States, as well as 95 per cent of the nation’s bent grass seed, 95 per cent of the hairy vetch, 90 per cent of the Aus trian winter peas and 90 per cent of the ladino clover seed. Josephine County leads in ladino seed production, he says, Linn in English rye grass, Gilliam in crested wheat grass, Malheur in irrigated clovers, central Oregon in alsike clover, and Willamette Valley coun ties in hairy vetch, crimson clover and vegetable seeds. Wiegand Freezing affords one of the simp lest methods of preserving foods, and is rapidly becoming one of the most popular with the establishment of storage locker facilities in more and more communities, says E. H. Wie- gand, head of the foods products in dustries division at Oregon State College. Professor Wiegand, who has done considerable work on frozen storage problems, points out that its use provides products closely approxi mating the fresh, and makes them available the year around. To obtain good results, however, it is necessary to follow closely and accurately the directions for preparing the different types of produce for frozen storage. Wiegand is the author of a recent experiment station circular on this subject, from which a mimeographed extract has now been made to pro vide the directions in a more conven ient form. Both are available free upon request. Blanching, a process of partially cooking and softening before freez ing, is essential to obtain high qual ity in frozen vegetables, Wiegand says. For storage containers, tin cans in sizes from No. 2 to No. 10 meet all requirements, he says. Glass jars and paraffined paper cups are also suitable, as are parchment or cellophane-lined waxed boxes where products are not to be packed in liquid. Sugar or salt solutions are used for some products, while others, such as berries and sour cherries, may be packed in dry sugar. Among the products for which freezing directions are given in the new mimeographed extract are ber ries, cherries, stone fruits, beans, asparagus, lima beans, broccoli, sweet corn, peas, spinach and cauli flower.
