DODHON KIHH CANNERY II til.IN-» NEW ICK HOC HE i M achinery for voting on w hether Cacade Locks shall be incorporated was again put in m otion this week when a petition bearing th e nam es of 60 sign ers was forw arded Tuesday to the county court at Hood River. The court w ill set a date for th e election to determ in e the fu ture status of Cascade Locks. The petition on which only 40 nam es were legally required, was sign ed by a m ajority of business men and old residents. It sets the proposed boundaries o f the town from 100 yards west of the Bridge o f the Gods to Just east of Carl s o n ’s Red and W hite store, and from the O regon-W ashington boundary In th e m iddle of the Co lum bia river to tn e footh ills. P roponents of Incorporation point out that highw ay construc- tln through Cascade Locks w ill not be delayed should reslaents choose to m ake the com m unity a city, since the state highw ay com m ission ow ns the right-of-w ay and by law m ust pay for Improve m ents to the road. CH4NNEL w o r k WILL SPEED UP NEW HIGHWAY Early construction of the new Colum bia River super-highw ay between Cascade Locks and T routdale seem s assured, now that army en gineers are prepar ing to dredge the channel o f the river from Vancouver to B onne ville. State highw ay en gin eers have been confronted with 10 m iles of heavy construction work on the new road, betw een m outh o f the Sandy river and Bridal V eil. The proposed road w ill parallel th e Union P aciifc railroad tracks at the base of Crown P oint. .Making th e necessary grade would ne an exp en sive operation. W hen dredging of the channel g ets under way th e sand and gravel rem oved from th e river can be throw n alon g th e river bank, form ing a roadbed for the highw ay. The river does not have to be dredged ffor the en tire distance, but there are tw o places adjacen t to Crown P oint w here large quan titie s of m aterial m ust be rem ov ed from th e channel. The h ig h w ay departm ent expects to faJl heir to th is m aterial and to use it to the best advantage. Dirt and rock to be rem oved rom E a g le creek cut » w ill be hauled down the railroad and dam ped beyond Bridal Veil. Other dirt and rock w ill be obtained for the Crown P oint fill when the highw ay en gin eers slic e o ff the side o f th e hill above Tanner creek at B on n eville for the pur pose of takin g curves and grades out o f th e road through Bonny V illa. The sta te h ighw ay com m ission appears determ ined to drive through th e super-h ighw ay just as rapidly as tim e and m oney w ill permit. Just how much m oney they will take from fed eral funds being m ade available to Oregon by th e federal governm ent is not clear, but there Is every reason to b elieve they can u se all that is needed, due to the fact that the governm ent at W ashington w ants to open up a fast, straight highw ay betw een th e B on neville dam area and Portland.
