Now, centuries after that eruptkm, tuan is taking advantage of natara*« gift and one o£ Ute innumerable lava caves of the Mcunt Adaats country han been pressed into service ls a cold storage plant. Geologists explain the praamm of numerous lava caves and lava rivers in tho Mount Adams district to the fact that the sheets of molten rock, flowing from the craterR of the vicinity, cooled rapidly on top but continued to flow underneath. Long paasage-llke caverns, some of them miles in extent, were formed be neath the surface of the lava arnat. Home of these, it is said, are connected with the glaciers which cover the sides nf Adams. A numlrer of “ice eaves" are to be found about-Mount Adams. These cav erns, for some reason, are partly filled with ice and maintain, the year round, a temperature like that of an lee box. s.' man, finding that nature had pro vided him with a natural refrigeration plant, baa proceeded to put nature's gift to practical use. The owr of the property on which one of these caves is locatsd has built a wooden building over the entmacs and la putting it to use as a storage place for farm products railed in the upper White Salmon valley. This particular cave, located but a few miles from Guler, haa long been an attraction for motorists visiting the gectiou. Its conversion to practical tine, however, will not deprive vtattors of viewing this queer prank of nature and the storehouse owner announces that the cave ran be visited when aa attendant to about to open the doors. Bins and shelves have been placed in the cave and the plant wQl be in <>iM>ratlou. as a naturally refrigerated cold storage place, within a tew wnakrs. s» *■ ■ • 4 * uW *■ , ■ I i 1 •Ï. ’• .1 _ to |H «hoohi fa closed. f ■ / .1 »■ k authorities work together for the com mon good to fortunate.
