L. MURPHY WHOLESALE AND RETAIL Hood River folk, who last week were privileged to preview “Above ‘ Cha Clouda,” motion picture produced En tirely in the Pacific northwest, with Mount Rainier forming a scenic back ground, failed to respond with any measure of enthusiasm. Walter Reece, of Seattle, producer and director of the picture, announced that he preferred to have the premiere showing of his screen drama, written by himself la collaboration with Mias Lorraine Kee ton, of Seattle, who also took the fe male lead, In a small town, residents of which, be decdared, form the back bone of mptiou picture support. “We chore Hood River,” Mid Mr. Reece, “for the reason that this Ore gon city, through the fame spread by 1U apples, has become the beet known small town in the world.” Hood River residents responded in liberal numbers to the invitation of the producer. Monotany may be said to be a chief charactettatic of the new picture. Tlw only beaqty of an unfolding of a poor ly executed story is gained through a projection of some of the glacial, snow field and-forest scenes of Rainier na tional park. Some of the mountaineer-, ing scenes, showing parties en route from Paradise inn to the summit, are extraordinarily good. But for the human interest element in the picture, it is vapid. At no point does the spectator get a kick. Rather there 1« a wonder what it is all about. There is no smoothness about the act ing. Selfconsciously the actors pose for their parts, and too often the spec tator realises that they are looking at the cameraman, instead of living the parts of a picture-drama. Expression of regret, over the fail ure of the picture to measure up to expectations, was general. It was evi dent that a great deal of very sincere effort had been expended In filing the production. Hood River had a venr kindly Inter est in the picture, for the reason that Miss Margaret Kissinger, daughter of Mr.* and Mrs. W. E. Kissinger, played a child's part. While her participation was more or less minor, it had an appeal that was above the average of others of the caBt. Miss Elisabeth McKlrn, in charge of publicity for the producing company, stated before leaving Monday that the film will be taken to the laboratory and given a thorough going-over. Photo graphic defects will he eliminated, she Mid, and about 1200 feet will be cut, eliminating the monotony. She ex pressed the belief that thia treatment along with a large number of sub titlea will make the picture more a pea ling.
