-, .-I r ’A c 4 * HEAVY SNOWFALL BLOCKS LOOP ROAD I Traffic over the Mount Hood Loop •highway is ended for this season. Much spring sunshine «-ill have to warm the earth, according to road of- ficisls and foresters before the heavy accumulation of snow that, has fsllei) in the highland forests is melted. It is estimated that the snow at Bennett Pass is now more than three feet deep, and it is stfll falling. Know covers th" Ixsip road as far down as the entrance to the national forest. Tlie heavy rainfall has brought great joy to orcbardlsts, who feared that their fruit trai ts might enter the winter with the surface of the earth so frozen that it wvuld prevent the season’s precipitation front seeping in. Until a week ago leas than an inch of rainfall bad prevailed since- last May, and the earth had dried out to a depth unknown here before. In case of a frozen crust on the surface before the heavy rainfalls and snows that annual ly prevail, the moisture would have run off into Mreams. The rainfall was welcomed by power concerns of the mid-Columbla. who were facing Interruption through lacjc of water in streams. Rivers here were at the lowest volume known. Or*., J. - C. announcing.” This wna beard over the air by radio fans of Portland and the Pactec Northwest Mouday night, whan the tirst program of thia new 1000-watt station went on the air. Mr. Read formerly operated KQP here for the Apple City Radio dub. Read, says the Portland Telegram, is a modest and somewhat quiet chap, wim apparently wanted no advance publidty on hla station until every thing was in readiness, and it waa not until the last minute he volunteered any news of his station. The staff for the station la H. B. Read, owner; Ivan Gilbert, operator; J. P. Coxan, announcer; Mrs. H. B. Read, hostess, and George A. Halton, in charge of the sale of time. .This station is strictly a commercial sta tion. The station is a 1000-watt station, using 1600 volts of Willard large type "B" batteries for the power source. The antenna system is of special de sign, reeembling a diamond in shape. This is the only station on the Pacific coast, operating exclusively by remote control, having the station located out side of the city limits.. The mechanic al end of KQP is one mile north of Sylvan,’ or is seven mile« outside of the city, snd three miles from any graded streets. This should not cause any in terference to radio fane in regard to listeuers-ln reaching out for distant stations. Present plans for KQ1\ programs will he Monday and Thursday nights weekly. This schedule will be in creased shortly when the station will be on the air nightly. The studio is located in the Portland Merry Wide« Dnnce Ssturday Night A Merry Widow dame will be given by C. T. Dewey at the American Le gion hall at White Salmon Saturday evening. A silver trophy cup will be awarded to the couple executing the best Merry Widow waits. Mr. Dewey, who was here Monday, is expecting a large number of Hood River couple«. The big hall will l>e uniquely decorated. The dance, it is declared, will he something entirely mid- different from any given in thetefi Columbia.
