lunù Ätarr tëlarirr TIMBER COMPANY ASKS FOR DISMISSAL OVERLOOKING FIGURES The Hood River News last week cited figures to show that the munici pal automobile park was not a failure from a financial standpoint. The News admitted an existing lndebtMlneaa of $1X000. The park’s revenue for the yenr reached an approximate $750. - "That’s fine." saya the Newt, “that's six per cent on an Investment of $12,- 000, What better returns do we want thia this?” But di*** the News stop to think that the city is obligated to the extent of $0.000 dn its option to purchase the park property? The In terest on this mm is $Mo. Th«* taxes on the property, which the city lias to pay, reached $222.55. Add thi*se two items np nnd you have a total of $702.55. Where is your income? Your municipal automobile i>ark is showing red ink. The figures, when you take them all, tell tlie story, and there U no need of any further comment. I THE YAKIMA HIGHWAY, Hood River folk should welcome the renewed agitation for the proposed early construction of the Yakima- White Ralmon highway. It is far more logical to talk of plans for such a motor road tlian to discuss the pro posal of a short-cut railroad from Yakima down to the Columbia gorge. Tlie road up to the east liase of Mount Ailanm through a wonderful parklike forested srea of jdnea, crossing the great chasm-like gorges of the Klicki tat and Big Muddy, will be anoth«*r scenic boulevard in days to home. It will supplement out*- Columbia River highway and the Mount Hood Loop. It will add another spoke in our hub of mid-Coluinbia scenic activity. Indwd. we of Hood Kiver should enter wlioleb<*artedly into plana for an <*ariy realisation of this Yakima- high way, which. too, will be a utilitarian route of primary importance. WARNING TO PARENTS Rarely a ilay jama»*«« that aorne child is not wen darting down the Htrep iatreetH of the city on a scooter, one of those two-wlmeled vehicle», the dir light of children, darting ilangerotioly near automobile«. But thia thrill of "scootering” down the hills should tie halted by jairenta. It la too danger ous. It will l«*ai<l to accident and tragedy if not halt«*d. I National Apple Week will atart Sat urday of next week. When loral rftop- jM*ra reach the bualnvw« section Satur day they should be greeted with ap- pealing dtsplaya of apides in every store window. We believe they will, The merchant and bnsineaa man of Hood Kiver la just an much interested in the diatrict'a fruit <-ro|M as la the oreiiardiat himself. If it were not for tiie annual a|>ple yield and the inter national market Ing of the tonnage, there would be but little in a business way here In Hood River for any of na during the winter m - iisoiih . The merdiant of Hood River should endeavor to make every w««ek apple week here. Apples are short tills year, but a quantity of the beat fruit idiould he held In storage for Hale to motor tourists when they start their Heaaanal trek next spring. The deitonslr, the smiling, the chal lenging gentleman desperado. Tom Murray, stems not so sure of himself, now thst a jury of his peen has found him guilty of murder and the seniente of death has l»*eii pronounced. Sure, It Is tough on Murray. We may per mit ourselves to feel sorry for him. but justice 11HH been done, anil convicts hereafter will not be «0 keen on-stag Ing bieaks. shooting down guard* and terrorising the surrounding country. The iqqiles are picked, and Octol>er'n mild days of Indlsu summer have not yet ended. Nover has a harvest been concluded as early a» thin season. Never have growers been so favored with ideal weather conditions, Yet all of uh , orcliardfsti. merchants. Indeed ail the iMipulatlon of the < «immunity, are wishing that we had more applit* to pick tliis year. JUDGE CAREY HERE TUESDAY EVENING Jnilge Charles II.
