IRONSIDES STORY
TO GO OVER AIR
“Old Ironsides” will have a full
hour on the air the night of October
17 when Curtis D. Wilbur, aecretary
of the navy, broadcasting through WC-

adelphia, WCAE Pittaburgh, WQR
Buealo, WWJ Detroit, WOC Daven­
port. WCCO Minneapolis and W8AI
Cincinnati, will tell of the deeds and
adventures of thia famous historic
treasure and formally open the Benev­
olent and Protective Order of Elka*
campaign’to raise >500,000 to restore
this old ship.
The program will open at 8.45 and
following the announcement a naval
band will give a concert for 15 min­
utes and then. the aecretary of tije
navy will come on the air. The naval
band will follow with another concert
and then Robert Hilliard, the well
known actor, will recite Oliver Wen­
dell Holmes' poem, "Old Ironsides."
The marine band will dose the pro­
gram, with a concert, concluding num­
ber being “The Htar Spangled Banner.”
In addition to this major program,
tlie Elks in every part of the country,
through the courtesy of the National
Broadcasters’ association, have ar­
ranged during “Old Ironsidee” week,
October 1ft-24, for Elk orators to be on
the air every night to tell the story of
this famous old ship and their efforts
to save hei^ through the children of the
nation. Hundreds of thousands of
schools will stage patriotic exercise«
commemorative of the deeds and ad­
venture« of thia old frigate and the
early traditions of the American navy.
Local Elks are busy arousing an en­
thusiasm among the school children of
the community in the essay contest.
