CrantpUl spent last week with Mrs. Benton Mays on the Maye ranch above Dee, and both of these ladies put in the entire week in copying Interesting historical data from the flies of the old weekly Mountaineer of 1X66. Probably no one else in the state of Oregon would call this an enjoyable vacation, but Mrs. Crandall and Mrs. Mays are in tensely Interested in the early hls- tory of this section, and Its preserva tion, and each devotes a considerable portion- of her time to it. Mrs. Crandall ran acrons one item in particular that called Ixck former days. A story was in the Mountain eer telling of a county fair here, and giving the winners of prises. One award was for the "beat lady eques trian,” and when Mrs. Crandall read it she got a good laugh. "At that time,” she said, "there was an oflker at the post here who had a very beautiful cavalry horse.* I was 12 years old and used to riding, and he got me a side saddle, and let me ride this horse. While we were go ing around the track, I pulled up on the horse rather shortly, and, true to his cavalry training, he stopped in stantiy—so quick that I went right on over his head.
