Williams, ¡mst commander of the Department of Oregon, Grand Army of the Republic, died at his home iu Gladstone, July 24. Mr. Williams was the side and efficient adjutant general and quartermaster general the Department for 17 years. At the state encampment held at Newberg iu 1907 8. F. Blythe was elected Department Commander, lie gave Mr. 'Williams Ills first appoint ment as adjutant mid for 17 years he tilled the office, giving his whole time to it. At ‘ Pendleton encauqi- ment in 1922 lie whs elected Depart ment Commander. During his term of office he visited every Grand Army pout in the state of Oregon. Mr. Williams was born iu Thetford, Vt., August 28, 1844. As a lad of 19 he eullsted in Company I, 9th Ver mont volunteers, and entered Rich mond with tlie victorious Union army. After the war was o%er he lived In bls native state and then pioneered In western Kansas. He returned east, living In Franklin, N. II., uffill 1887, When he came to the Pacific coast, embarking in the sawmill busi ness near Beattie. He nine to Ore gon City three years later and was one of the earliest settlers of Glad stone, where be lived for 35 years, Is-iug an ex-meujber jut the Gladstone city council. He was a member of the first Methodist church of Oregon City for many years and a member of the offi clal board. He belonged to Huiimer Post, G. A. R., for years, but recently transferred to Meade Post, Oregon City, of which he was formerly a memls-r. He was a member of the Gladstone lodge of Odd Fellows. He is survived by two sons, W. A. Williams, of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Clark H. Williams, a member of the Oregonian staff. The funeral Was held Saturday from the Methodist church at Oregon City.
