ANDERSON, Sole Proprietor Licensed Embalmer and Funeral Director 41» OAR STREET Hood River baa no grratfr student of European nfthira than Rev. C. B. Deiepine, pastor of the First Baptist church. Mr. IMeptne recently aroused keen Interest among members of tbe Tuesday Lunch with a brief out line of the situation in Old World pol itico. At tbe request of Tbe Glacier he has glren below a brief synopela of l*Is views of the European situation: Complicatedas it may appear, tbe situation in Europe is yet more oem- pUcated than it appears A number of eonflicting questions form eddies and whirlpools constantly changing with the flow of current events. Take the political question. We all knew now that one of the with the central power, Germany at tained for a while her dream of all land communication, through middle Europe and the Near East. A glance nt tbe map of the Old World shows plainly that no ¡lowers can attain to tbe emgtre of tbe world apart from the control of the Near East. It is the croea land road of the three continents of Asia. Europe and Africa. One may control the Near East and not be able to control the world, but one cannot rule the world without controlling the Near East. The defeat of tbe central powers did not settle. It simply shifted the polit ical question. England knd France fought diplo matically for the control of this key to world power. While they fought Turkov revived, and as neither Eng- land'hor France was willing to let the other control Armenia and the Trans-Caucasian republics, and as the senate of our country would not ac cept the mandate, tbe three republics along ths Caucasus range, stretching from the Black to the Caspian sens, are now under tbe control of Soviet RuHAia. Again a glance at the map shows clearly that through bar con trol of both sides of the Caucasus mountains. Russia has now the posses sion of the door to the Near East and has the key in her pocket. Doth Russia and Germany are am bitions of world power. Russia is the youngest of nations snd never had really her fling. Russia han the nat ural wealth that Germany lacks and Germany haa the technical skill so mnch needed by Russia. The land communication with the Near East, through middle Europe, has been taken away from Germany by the late war, but a better one through Russia is hers whenever the two coun tries can unite their power and their purpose. To Mock thia dread combination, the treaty of Versa filercreated a chain of states separating Russia from Ger many, and the aim of the French pol icy has been to make this chain un breakable. But if ever Russia and Germany can come together and Invade the Near East, no one will be able to stop them. The stronger does France make her self on the Rhine, the more It becomes that the conflict win take place In the Near East. A . Russia revived and proiqiefoun, a Russia having military Hticceasra, and all the wretern nations, sinking under the weight of unpayable debts, may follow Russia's example and repudiate their obligations. Bus ala. which haa certainly the gift of government, might certainly tafonie the center of a United States of Europe. Our own act of exclusion dltected against all the Asiatic may have suc- «•«‘eded by that time In uniting Asia, and if ao, we might be glad to throw ourselves into this white man's com biaation to face the yellow rare in the great impending amfllrt between the West and the East, the center of which would fatally be the Near East. But then comes the social question. Russia is communistic, the very Ger mans who want alliance with Russia to fulfill their world dresnia are cap italistic. The social tendencies can mix no better than water with oil. Therefore, socially, capitalistic GeV many inclines toward western nations and awray from Rusaia. Then comes the Industrial question. It renters in the Ruhr. Germany has the coal since the war. France has the iron. The interest of these two nations. Industrially speaking, is to pull together. If they do so the Rhine provinces would become the greatest industrial renter In the world. Natural wealth, population, technical skill of the high est order, powner of organisation, tr- keto at the door, all is there. The possibilities of this may well cause 11a uneasiness and it makes Eng land to tremble. Thus, industrially »lieeklng. there is a question which unites Germany and France, would unite them if they could trqst each other, separate France from England, and leave Russia a great question mark. Then we face the moral and spirit ual questions. As far as observable all past civilisations fell with the de cay of religious faith. I think this is fatal. The worst and falsest religions hare thia truth in them that they rec ognise an authority superior to man. Tills gives a basis for an authoritative standard of morality. It may be a poor one, but yet it gives a common ground of action. Let faith in religion go, down goes also the authority of the moral standard built on It, and with it, down comes all authority, hence decay and the death of the type of civilisation built on this particular standard. Europe lias tbe advantage of the Bi ble with the perfect moral standard of the 10 commandments. Europe never cnine up to it, nevertheless It had an authoritative standard. The rapidly decaying faith in the Bible in sapping in Europe, as well- as here, the very foundation of a civilisation which owes the beat it haa in it to the high stan dard of morality Ret forth In the Bible. Thus to the confusion created by a numlier of conflicting questions must he added the terrible danger of a de cay in faith in any authority. No one can tell where we are drifting. The greatest statesmen in Europe candidly announce th<4r Ignorance. They know, we know that we are drifting faster and faster, but no one knows where. Tbe only ray of light helping us to discern the direction of the drift comes from some Biblical prophecies concern ing the reaction of the human rare when tile message will have reached all the nations -—- .... 11 Apart from this, no one has as yet ventured a guess as to where Europe, and with it, the rent of the world is drifting to. Only that just now,the drift proceeds with accelerated vel ocity. Hood River Box Co., box msnufac- taring, llood River. Oregon. Phons 1342. 4 Does Your Head Ache ? Do not suffer needlessly.
