Harmony, progress and success marked the first quarterly meeting of the Hood River County Pomona grange for the year 1924. This meeting was held in tlie hall uf the Pine Grove grange Wednesday, Feb ruary «. It was largely attended. Forenoon nnd afternoon sessions were held and the ladies of the entertaining grange served a Is iu nt colts mid sulr- stmitial dinner at the noon hour inter mission. That the meeting was decidedly har monious is prisif of the unanimity Which the grangers of tlie valley are exhibiting in thought and action. The project of tax reduction is one of the outstanding problems before the peo ple mid the members of Pomona grange were as of one mind when tills ini|N>rtant subject was discussed and .voted upon. Several resolutions on tax reductions and on conservation of public funds were introduced mid dis cussed mid tliey were passed by unani mous votes. A firm mid unanimous stand was also taken on the strict en forcement of all liquor prohibition laws. In the midst of the consideration of these weighty mid inqsirtant questions tlie grange gathering paused to pay respect anil tribute to tlie nation's de parted war time president, tlie late Woodrow Wilson. A brief memorial was held and a resolution was unani mously passed expressing tlie loss that was felt in the passing of the late chieftain, Tlie present condition of the Ameri can farmer dates from May 18, 1922, when the board of governors and ad visors of the 12 federal reserve banks piet at Washington, D. C., and decided to call iu all tiie bank loans made to farmers. Several years of (troaperily made it possible for tlie farmer to pay off old debts and mortgages. That did not suit the capitalistic class, for If tlie farmers were out of debt, tlie capitalists would l>e deprived-of an ini|s>rtmit nuirket for mt investment of their 'accunnrhited fortunes. So Iliey passed the word along to the banks tiirougliout tlie country that all Ti i finer's Ton us must la1 called in and settled for In cash. Securities were to lie refused, even Liberty bonds were refused as security. As a result of tliis policy, the tanners were forced to dump tlieir grain, cotton, cattle, fruit, or whatever they hml, on tlie market. Tlie markets broke under that forced policy mid that in turn broke tlie fann ers tiirougliout tlie land, aud they have been. lit. that condition ever since. More crops will hot now give tlie need ed relief; diversified farming will not do; cooperation will not help; noth ing that tlie fanner can do will help for tlie reason that lie is at present producing goods below cost. When tlie farmer lilts to expend $5<Mt to pro duce $4<HI wortli of goods, lie is tinan- cinlly sick. There Is not one such cast! but millions of them today. These ills will not lie cured until tlie control of tlie nation's money is tnken out of tlie hands of tile bunking fraternity and placed in (lie hands of Hie United Bittles treasury, where it morally and constihitionally belongs. Mr. Mickle’s address brought forth a strongly worded resolution to the ef fect that it is tlie sentiment of tlie grangers of tliis valley that they will withhold tlieir patronage from all mer- elinnts who deal in dairy substitutes. <».
