The Renublican state central com
mittee, under instructions from legis
lative and senatorial canamaiea, sen
torial hoM-overs state committeemen
and other leading Republicans from
every county in Oregon, has called a
meeting of Republicans to be held in
Portland September 26 for the purpose
of adopting a set of principles telling
the voters for what the party stands in
the coming campaign.
Delegates to the meeting will con
sist of all Republican legislative and
senatorial candidates, and hold-over
senators, state and congressional com
mitteemen, all Republican county
chairmen and vice chairmen, and all
Republican county ofheers and Repub
lican candidates for county office.
A committee was appointed at a.
meeting held in Eugene baturday,
September 9, to draft a set of resolu
tions for submission to the convention.
Senator Bruce Dennis, of La Grande,
was made chairman of the committee
and any Republican having any sug
gestions of "planks" to offer, is in
vited to send the same 10 wr, Dennis,
but all such planks must be submitted
before noon of September 25.
Headquarters for the convention will
be at the Imperial Hotel and the place
for holding the meeting will be an
nounced throucrh the presal-1"
. This convention is the result of a
trin throucrh the state of the ofheers of
the new Republican state central com
mittee, Chairman Tooze ana secretary
C. E. Inealls. They have visited every
county in the state and organized the
county committees. At a meeting held
in Pendleton of eastern uregon itepuo
licans it was decided to hold a state
wide meeting for the purpose of adopt
ing a platform providing the plan met
with the approval of the Republicans
of the First and Third congressional
districts. This meeting waa held 8t
Eueene September 9 and the plan was
unanimously approved.
"I think it is very important." said
Chairman Tooze, '-'for the Republican
party to have a platform upon which
its state candidates should run. This
will enable the Republicans of the
state to know what they are voting
for, and will fix definitely the respon
sibility of the fulfilling of all promises
made to the people. As it is now,
there are 76 different platforms by as
many different candidates and hence
no organized responsibility. This in
a large measure has been the cause of
many unnecessary tax measures. We
propose to hold the party responsible
for legislation and we believe we will
thereby get better legislation."
The Eugene meeting was an entnusi-
astic one, delegates from every county
pledging support to Governor Olcott in
his campaign for reelection. The
governor was present and made an
address at the evening banquet which
was well spoken of by the delegates
present. He said he proposes to sub
mit to the legislature a definite and
constructive plan for tax reduction and
tax equalization and the plan will be
the result of the exhaustive labors of
the tax investigation committee which
he appointed last winter.
North Bank Work Costly -According
to Senator Crawford, of
Ganddalles, here last week, the eon
tract for the North Bank Highway be
tween Underwood and Lyle will be let
the first part of October..; ,H Is esti
mated that this piece -of road, in the
neighborhood of eight miles in length
will cost more than half a million dol
lars. Survey of the road between Un
derwood and Hood in Skamania county
has been ordered. Powder for the
work will be furnished hy the county,
while the work on the road is to be
done by the fish hatchery officials, and
residents of Underwood and Hood.
Much improvement is planned in
Skamania county, one of the proposed
Droiects beina the purchase of six
acres of ground at the Cedars at Wil-
lards on the Little White balmon river,
long a favorite spot with fishermen
and hunters.
The Cooks grade is now finished.
The big steam shovel which has been
at work on this grade completed its
operations last week and the road has
been opened for trainc. ine grade
which is about three rriles in length
has been widened to 27 feet, and an
average of a seven per cent grade
established.
Skamania county and the state have
just awarded a contract for a new road
from the highway to Lava creeK. ine
rad will be 12 feet wide and well
graveled.
A County Dental Clinic
The re Dort from Miss Campbell, our
efficient county health nurse, will en
able all those who read it, to appreci
ate the importance of a dental clinic
for our county. These are moves in
the right direction. These clinics are
not, however, to care for the teeth of
children whose parents are fully able
to meet the cost of dental work, but
only for children who otherwise would
have to go without the care so much
needed for their teeth.
We have no doubt that the whole
community will back up such a work.
doing all that is needed to bring to it
all the success it deserves so richly.

C. N. Clarke Burns Feet
C. N. Clarke suffered badly burned
feet and the loss of a pair of trousers
last week when the bottom dropped
out of a lar of Ive. allowing the caus
tic liquid to flow down his legs. Mr.
Clarke would have been badly burned
but for the nearnen of a hose at
tached to. a faucet in the compounding
room of his firug store. He turned
thia on to the lye drenched limbs and
weakened the liquid before it pene
trated. Man Drowns at Cascades
Visitors from Cascade Locks have
brought news of the drowning in the
mill pond of the Donovan-Dubois Lum
ber Co. at Cascades. Wash., just across
the Q I jmbia in Skamania county, of
Joe Williams. He was missed at noon
and hi hat was found floating on the
pond. The body was found by grp
plers three houra later in D feet of
water. Williams, ho is survived by
his wife had resided at Cascades about
10 years.

The following bulletin issued by the
tied Cross and Public Health bureau
shows the importance of dental clinics
lor children:
At a meeting of the Red Cross board
of directors held at the Oregon Hotel
Wednesday noon, September ti, it was
voted that equipment for a dental
clinic be installed in the public health
nurse's office, in the bafement of the
public library at Hood River. The
local dentists have shown a splendid
public spirit by consenting to devote
one day a month, free of charge, to
caring for the children a teeth.
Everyone today is concerned in the
health of his teeth and mouth, form
erly diseases of the mouth were con
sidered to be only of passing interest
for it was thought that, although they
produced temporary pain and discom
fort, at the worst, they could- only re
suit in the loss of teeth. But more re
cently we have come to recognize a
distinct relationship between the com
mon dental diseases and the general
health of the individual. It has been
shown that a diseased mouth may
mean a diseased body and that serious
systemic derangements may arise from
a diseases in and about the teeth.
Since September 5, 100 Hood River
county school children were examined
for dental defects, and only 10 of the
100 children were found to have teeth
in good condition. The others were
found to have pus exuding from the
gums, deciduous teeth blocking the en
trance of permanent teeth, atrophied
teeth due to nutritional disturbances
during infancy or early childhood,
absence of or decayed six-year molars.
It is found in the majority of cases
that if children be kept in perfect
physical condition they are mentally
alert. A child who has physical de
fects including defective teeth is liable
to repeat his grade perhaps several
times at a great cost to the commun
ity. As we know, in Oregon it costs
almost $100 a year to educate each
child. It costs the taxpayer two and
three times this amount to put a child
who is physically defective through
school, and in the end what is very
often the result of this expenditure?
A citizen who cannot take care of him
self or his family as they should be
cared for and very often is a csunty
charge, add to this the physical and
mental sufferings of those people and
you have the price paid for neglect
during childhood.
It was found in an examination of
the childrens' teeth at the Northwest
ern high school, Detroit, Mich., that
those with good teeth have two and
one half times as many high marks as
those with very bad teeth and only one
third as many failures. For every
two children with good teeth, who
have to repeat a subject, seven with
bad teeth have to do fo.

men, on a heavy fill at Whiskey creek.

until next spring in order not to block
apple hauling, will probably be com
pleted in the next four weeks.
Jopiln & Eldon, contractors on the
Booth Hill unit, whose work has been
delayed because of activities of I. W.
W., are expected to complete this sec
tion before December 1. They still
have about 2,000 feet of heavy excava
tion. The Johnson Contract Co., building
the 12-mile grade from Booth Hill to
the boundary of the Oreeon National
Forest, still have about 6,000 feet of
grading left. The ritrht of way has
been slashed entirely through to the
national forest. '
Legion Offers Essay Prizes
Essays on "How the American Le
gion Can Best Serve the Nation" are
arriving at state headquarters in Port
land. School children in Oregon will
have until October 6 to present their
essays, extension being granted in
order to give students an opportunity
of consulting with their teachers.
Prizes as follows, will be given win
ners: National, $750, first; second,
$500; third, $250; to be used for schol
arships. The essay must not be over 500
words in length. Any boy or girl be
tween the ages of 12 and 18 may com
pete. All essays must be in the hands
of the state adjutant of the American
Legion in Portland not later than Oct
ober 6. Selection will be made by
Legion judges of the three best essays
and there will be forwarded and en
tered in the national contest. National
winners will be announced during
November.
Charivari Sad Affair
Vandalism of a party engaged in a
rharivari last week at the home of a
newly wed Belmont couple. Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Norder, may result in crim
inal complaints. The serenaders did
ni t stop with the usual greetings of
noises hut ascended the roof, tote off
shingles, stopped chimneya with burlap
bags filled with sand. They alo raid
ed an orchard adjoining the Norder
home, removing props and causing the
destruction of numerous trees.
Officers state that the ringleader! of
the charivari party were identified.
