Radio Rex Latest Toy Radio toys are coming to be the rage. The latest thing seen here, called "Radio Rex," was shown last week by Cecil Lafferty at the Franz store; It was a bulldog in a small kennell. The dog's tail was pressed against a trap that was released by an arrangement on the side of the kennel, agitated by vibration of the voice. When one cried, "Here, Rex!" the bulldog fair, ly jumped at him. flvlls of Constipation Perhaps the most serious of the dis eases caused by constipation is appen dicitis, if you would avoid mis aan- fjerous disease, keep your bowels regu ar. Prop. fboM MCI Keaidcsrc fbooc Va ELLIOTT ANNOUNCES . EARLY LOOP FINISH By the middle of next summer the Mount Hood Loop wad will be pasa able for motorists the entire distance from Portland ud the Sandy river and thence by the Barlow road around the East Side of the mountain to tne nooa River valley and back over the Colum bia River Highway. Such was the in formation given last week by J. A. Elliott, chief engineer for the Bureau of Public Roads of the Northwestern Department, including Alaska, -who had iust returned from a tour of in fraction of the Hood River end of the 23-mile link of the highway in the Oregon National forest. Mr. Elliott, who has supervision of forestry road work that will cost an aggregate of about $15,000,000 this year, declared that he was as enthusi astic over the Mount Hood Loop as any of the many roads under his supervi sion. He declared that it would add new wonders to Oregon scenery al ready available to the motorist. Mr. Elliott, who was stationed cere in ituo in charge of construction of Mitchells Point tunnel, said : "The oeoDle of Hood River ought to greet with jubilation ' announcements of the' Bureau of Public Roads in has tening the Mount Hood I oop, for the opening of 1 this scenic thoroughfare will attract as many peopie to tne val ley as the Columbia River Highway. It will be a new and clirractic chapter in Oregon road building." 'We round tnac vxHiiractor j. rj. Clarkson, who last year graded six miles within the forest bounds, now has a crew of six men on the new grade engaged in breaking he snow and in opening ditches. Twenty more will be dispatched at once from Port land to make ready for grading the additional 17 miles." Plans call for completion of the grading this fall, and as soon as the road is open next year birdges will be built. Mr. Eliott says that the most appealing span of the route will be a concrete arch across a small creek, tributary to the East Fork of Hood river. The bridge will set just below beautiful waterfall, the longest span will be that across the White river. This bridge will probably be of steel construction. While on the tour of inspection Mr. Elliott accompanied by W-G. Peters who will succeed J. E. Andrews as en gineer in charge of the work, Mr. An drews having been dispatched to Missoula.-Mont: to take charge of a sub-office, inspected quarries. Two lo cations for crusher set-ups were chos en. Bids on the rock surfacing or 10 miles of the road will be advertised at once, Mr. Elliott stated. "1 was surprised at the way the snow was melting on the high eleva tions," said Mr. Elliott. "The mid day temperature the first of the week was as high as during mid-summer, and one grew uncomfortably hot hiking over the trails. Warm winds will melt the snow more rapidly than the sun, now that the crust has softened." HANNUM IS BUILDING ELABORATE RESORT J. O. All of his help are full blooded Americans. Mr. Koberg is not a believer in the federal free seeds.distributed annually by congress men. He says: "Progressive business men and far mers are always looking for something better. It is especially so with us gardeners, who wish to improve our seed. While we wouldn't give five cents per pound for Uncle Sam's free seeds, we have just paid at the rate of $80 per pound for some tomato seed. We have developed a tomato excellent for our purposes, calling it the Mooai River Special. If we can secure a to mato that will ripen 10 days or two weeks earlier and still retain its qual ity, we will have a gold mine. We have secured eome highly developed foreign seeds, which we have mixed with ours this year. These are being dis tributed t among our city garden friends. In order to increase an interest among the vacant lot gardeners, Mr. Koberg has offered a prize of $2.50 for the season's first ripe tomato grown from his plants.
