THE BOOK & ART STORE HOOD IUYKR. 0RKG0N 'mmv inri vriv iUrllll LVWiL TULIl ARE IN LOS ANGELES Los Angeles, Jan. 30, 1922. Our fine weather took cold Friday. We went to Pasadena with clouds gathering and a stiff wind blowing. Saturday was cold and windy. We planned to drive to Long Beach Sun day, but woke up with the wind blow ing and the rain coming down hard so concluded to take the street car in stead. It rained more or less all day, while the wind rose to a gale, the streets running gutter full, some trees blown down, debris and signs scattered over the walk, and cold enough so that we hovered over the little gas heaters all day. In fact, it has snowed some all over the southland. Riverside re ports up to three inches in the orange orchards. We had concluded to leave Wednesday for Pomona and go from there to the Imperial valley, but the rain extended down there and we will wait for reports from there as to roads before going. Perhaps we will stay here another week. Do not think we will drive to 1'hoenix, as reports of roads across the desert are not good. Will probably go from El Centre to San Diego and stay there a month. The congested traffic makes driving around Los Angeles very disagreeeable Specially if we have to cross the busy down-town streets. We have seen quite a few of the Hood River people down here and will try and see them all bfore we leave. The Stewarts are located at the El- don Apartments, operated by Mrs. II McGuire. Geo. Stranahan and party are in a pleasant apartment on Mary land bt. and will start homeward in a couple of weeks by the coast route. stopping along the way and plan to get home about March I. E. W. Hirge is planning on getting home at about the same time. Frank Massee is located at the Kosslyn and is putting in most of his time on business connected with the apple market. Clarence Gilbert is selling real estate and apartment in vesments and pleasantly located in the Euclid apartments with his wife and mother. The latter is much improved in health. L. L. Ireland with a part ner, has opened a hrst class restaurant called "Tubelles" at Figueroa and 7th Btreets, the best eating place in the neighborhood, and feeding as high as l.5!)U people a day. He iust returned from a hunting trip over the line south of Calexico and is recvovering from a two weeks' illness. J. J. Ward is back at his usual haunts at Long Beach, but on account of the bad storm we did not attempt to find him, but hope to later. We heard that L. ( lark la also here. H. M. Hicks haa a grocery store on Santa Barbara avenue and intend to get a good restaurant in the busy sec tion. Both he and Mrs. Hicks are eeling much better since coming to California. I saw K. W. I'ratt in his of lie; and had a nice visit. He is de lighted with Los Angeles, doing well and living in line section of Glendale. We called then on our way to I'asa dena and saw Mrs. I'ratt and his fa ther C G. I'ratt. The Witter is still on crutches from the effects of a brok en hip sustained in a fall a year ago, but slowly recovering. There are prob ably others here whom I have not got ten track of. We had a nice visit with C. W. Hooker and his efficient secret ry, Miss Seabrooke. Mr. Hooker is op timistic about the late apple market, and is having a better trade than ever this year in Hood River apples. He says they are taking Newtowns much earlier than before. The frost damage will undoubtedly help the late lean-un of apples at stronger prices. He says that California apples are becoming more of a factor every year in this market) Many new and large acreages have been planted in the mountains near here and in northern Arizona, which are keeping local markets sup plied down through Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, yet the increasing population and new outlets are keep ing pace and consuming more Hood River apples than ever. The greatest problem is the retailer. He still charges an aveiage ol ahoul if-l.iHi a box, making too much profit. The liealerB say they are in the hands and at the mercy of the retailer. Anyone who can successfully lower the retail price to the trade will largely inCfOSJO consumption and not necessarily lower the net returns to the grower and be hailed as a great benefactor to the in dustry. The excess profits of the re tailer allows the establishment of thousands of fruit stands, where one fourth the number could supply the market better, at a lower price, and make a better net profit and a larger increased volume of business. Sold by all good druggists WEST SIDE MARKET ROAD IS SELECTED At the regular itession last week the county couit selected for application of an approximate $2,000 of market toad funds a lap of the main West Side highway between the city limits and the R. H. Wallace place. This road was treated with waterbound macadam in 1911. The coming of automobiles however, resulted in early deteriora tion, and since it has been necessary to apply severe sorfacingl of gravel. In former years all market road funds have been expended on the East Side, in the vicinity of Fine Grove and Odell, centers where the. traffic of ap ple trucks and wagons is very heavy in the harvest season. Construction of the Mount Hood Loop Highway valley trunk, across the Bait .side, will, it is said, result in applying all future mar ket road funds to the West Side dis trict White Salmon Growers Elect The annual stockholders' meeting of the Columbia Fruit Union was held re- ently in the Oddfellows' hall banquet room. A large attendance was present. John G. Wyers, E. M. Peek and A. R. Haves were elected trustees, with A. E. "Glader, W. B. Miller, N. P. Mears and C. Warnecke holdovers. A resolu tion was adopted by the stockholders recommending to the board of trustees that no grower should be allowtd stor age in the company's warehouse unless he he a stockholder. A. E. Mills, hor ticultural inspector, talked on "Co operation." But it is a fact that the reborinp; of cylinders of auto mobile motors restores them to their normal power. The little increase in the size of the rebored motors does not increase the power, but the fact that the motors are put in the condition in which, presumably, they left the factory, often accounts for wiiat owners justly claim to be a noticeable increase in power. We have the most up-to-date facilities for reboring your cylinders. HOWELL BROS.
