Johnsen and Homer (L Van Al len, is declared by widely experienced motorists to be the best on the Colum bia river. The craft is declared one of the best in the Northwest. Last Thursday the Glacier man was driven to the boat land inc hv (lennrp C. Gladden of the Mt. Hood Motor fVi A new Nash was taken for a trial trin across the river. All agreed that the new boat was capable of handling the traffic between the Columbia River Highway and the North Hank, a truffle that is growing heavier everv dv Mr. Van Allen is oilot of the new boat. He is rirnnil at It. Sinr-n nut. ting the Cleona in commission he says ne wonuers now ne ever nanaied trame with the old Panama. The Cleona is of a siise that gives the passenger a sense of utmost secur ity, the windiest day on the Columbia doesn't cause her any worry. She is equipped with a huge 80 H. P. semi Deisel engine, which burns crude oil. The powerful motor chugs steadily ahead, and doesn't change her tune in the least, even though a wave sub merges the paddles. The boat is 56 feet from stem to stern. She meas ures 22 feet, inside measurement, from star board to larboard. The Cleona is equipped with electric lights. She is double ended, and no matter which way she is traveling. she is going straight ahead. The boat has carried 12 big automobiles and two sitddle hordes at a single load. While the owners were designers of the new craft, she waa built by A. S. Sheplar, formerly one of the owners of the ferry system, who has made a name for himself as a ferry boat builder, having built the Panama, which the Cleona eucceeds, and other craft. The new boat is equipped with elec tric lights, generated by the big motor. WAGON LICENSE UP TO SUPREME COURT Pecause of the agitation over local Portland truck delivery licensing, the following dispatch to the Oregonian from Oregon City, appearing last week, will be of interest here: The supreme court will be asked to decide whether the Oregon City ordi nance known as the vehicle ordinance, passed last month, and putting a li cense of $10 a month a vehicle on de livery cars and trucks delivering goods to Oregon City merchant!" from outside points, is legal. About 50 Portland job bers and manufacturers who deliver their products to Oregon City met yes terday afternoon in the Chamber of Commerce rooms to diKUfl ways and means of combating the ordinance, and decided to lay the matter before the supreme court. The meeting was pre sided over by J. W. Vogan, of the Vogun Candy Company. A number of methods of retaliation were proposed by those in attendance, among them a proposal that the city council be asked to pass an ordinance putting a tax on Clackamas county farmers who sell their produce to the Portland markets. The suggestions re ceived will be held in abeyance and for consideration until the supreme court renders a decision on the Oregon City vehicle license. Why Not? Editor Glacier: The governor ap pointed a committee of three as per a resolution of the recent legislature to investigate and report additional sources ot taxation so that the VJ2.1 legislature would have some place to get more money to run the gieat state of Oregon. Along comes Wm. L. Fin- ley, known to most nature lovers, in an open letter to the governor and sug gests that the state raise some money from the fishing industry. I he salmon ack for 1800 totaled over 112.000.000, The last legislature appropriated $91,- iOO of the taxpayers money to raise more fish for the salmon packers to pack, lhe state collected over 160,000 in angler's licenses, which money goes to the state hatchery tund, according to Mr. Finley, also to raise more fish for the commercial interests. The United States government col lects $12,500 a year from the Columbia Kiver Packers' Association for seining privileges off Sand Island near the mouth of the Columbia river. The state of Minnesota collected $105,000 from commercial fishermen who se cured from the waters of that state carp and other trash fish which the fishermen sold for $275,000. What kind of business are the people of Oregon In that they can afford to raise 1160.000 from the taxpayers in order to subsidize the salmon packers of the state of Oregon? What is the argument used on the legislature that the salmon packers are entitled to this money at the expense OI inerestoi the state? Tax Ferret Mr. Cannon Breaks Rib City School Superintendent Cannon sustained a broken rib last week in a peculiar manner. Mr. Cannon, mounted on a stepladder, was engaged in prun ing a mulberry tree, using a set of large hand pruners. Mr. Cannon had tried vainly to cut off a large branch. Finally he placed one handle of the pruning shears against the tree trunk and grasped the other with both hands, exerting bis full force on the tug. When the limb was severed.the end of the handle was plunged Into his left side. "1 do not think one of Jack Pemp- sey's blows could have been much worse," says Mr. Cannon, who it forced to wear his torso in a cast as a result of the accident. Rubles Displays Fine Dahlias Judson G. Kuggles, foreman of the composing room oi me uiacier, raises dahlias as a hobby. He has a hundred varieties of the beautiful sieoies of Sow. Seventy new and gorgeous varieties have been planted in his gardens. Mr. Kuggles has arranged with the rirst National Bank and the Fran ttofl to display daily a bououet of a different variety'. lt Friday he be gan his displays of gorgeous blooms, and a different color daily, from now on until frost, will appear on the bank desk.
