New Librarian Announced
Mrs. Anne C. Haxley, of Fargo, N.
rX has been appointed county librar
ian. Mrs. Haxlev, who has worked in
the Fargo library, has just completed
a two-year library course at the Uni
versity of Wisconsin. She was secured
through Mrs. A. G. Lewis who former
ly resided in rargo.
Mrs. Haxley, according to plans an
nounced, will devote a major portion
of her time to extension work in rural
communities. Several vallev branches
of the library are planned.
Mrs. Callahan Again Named President
Mrs. Ida B. Callahan was again
named president of the Oregon State
Federation of Woman's Clubs at a ses
sion held in Pendleton. Mrs. William
Munroe and Mrs. Chas. H. Castner
were the only local women present for
the meeting.

The flood waters of the Columbia
again raised havoc last week to the
truck gardens along the Columbia bot
tom, just below town. The flood waters
have been getting higher each day and
encroaching upon the gardens. A con
servative estimate of the loss to truck
gardeners has been placed at $25,000. ,
One of the main features of enter
tainmei.t of the Fourth of July cele
bration to be held at White Salmon
this year under the auspices of the
American legion will be a bit? parade.
At a joint meeting of the various
Fourth of July committees Friday
evening it waa decided to commence
the day'a program with the parade.
Geo. L. Willey was named as chairman
of the parade committee and has prom
ised to stage one of the biggest and
best parades ever assembled in White
Salmon, if proper support is given him.
With lower prices in building mater
ial, construction of new buildings is
going on in the White Salmon valley.
Manager J. W. Dickey, of the Colum
bia Fruit Union, which handles build
ing material of all kinds, reports the
aale of lumber to C. E. Larsen, of Un
derwood Heights, who is erecting a
house; also the sale of lumber to A. J.
Haynes, of l)nderw(xd Heights, who
is building a large apple house. The
Union will also furnish material to
H. T. Skaalheim who is building a
garage and dance h ll at Cooks. J. J.
McNutt. of Underwood, ia also figuring
on building an apple house. Bert Hall
has been building a cement sidewaiK,
and a concrete floor in the basement of
the Geo. A. Read residence this week.
