B. Finch and W. A. White, representatives of Ko bison & Co., fruit merchants, whoee headquarters are at Minneapolis and who distribute through the Dakotas mid Intermountain sections, here last week to investigate strawberry crop conditions, express the belief that berry prices will show a heavy d crease over last year, they do not an ticipate that the price of Clark Seed lings, as grown here, will show a de cline nroportionate to other commodi ties. The Robinson Co. for a decade has handled practically all of the carlot shipments of Clark .Seedling strawber ries grown here and in Washington mid-Columbia fruit sections. They returned the Apple Growers Associa tion an average of $4.38 per crate. record price for the fruit, last season "We are simply out on a scouting trip now," said Mr. White. "We are buying nothing andjwe can tell nothing about price. It is true, however, that the purchasing power of the population in the territory that we serve, just as in other sections of the country, is far below last year, and you can expect a drop close to JB0 per cent in prices Hut your growers of Hood Kiver are especially favored in that you havea fruit unexcelled in shipping quality and you are so closely aliened in a co operative shipping organization that you can distribute your fruit to the best advantage." Mr. White pointed out that express rates were going to be very high this year, an increase having been granted transportation companies after the crop of last season had been moved. He stated that it would cost $1 per crate to deliver berries at middle western points the coming season as compared with 55 cents for pre-war days. I he Canadian territory will not ap peal as a distributing territory because of the heavy duties imposed and be cause of the disparity of exchange. Mr. White says he believes a cam paign should be waged to encourage housewives in buying heavily of fresh strawberries and canning them at home. He does not anticipate a keen demand from canning concerns, a fea ture of last year's strawberry deal, as the dinners still hold heavy stocks. PIONEER WOMAN'S FUNERAL SATURDAY Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Saturday from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Ceo. 1. I'rather, in the Summit district, for Mrs. Alvira Elizabeth Reynolds, aged 81, who died Thursday night. Rev. J. L. Hershner officiated, interment following at Idle wilde cemetery. Mrs. Reynolds, a native of Wheeling, West Va., came to Astoria with her family in 1870. Later the family re sided for a time at The Dalles, coming here in 1881. Mr. Reynolds died in 1901. Other children surviving are: Mrs. Frank L Davidson, of the East Side, and Frank Reynolds, of Portland. The funeral was directed by S. E. If hi tmess. "REMARKABLE," SAY HUSBAND AND WIFE Winans Has Another Petition W. R. Winans was here yesterday seeking signers to a petition to Port laud oflicia's and asking that they re consider their objections to a proposed road from Lost Cake over Colo Pass to the highway penetrating the couth side of Mount lb ml to Government ('amp. Mr. Winans says that the distance is only a few milep. The forestry ser vice, which has already , cut a wide trail the most of the way over the pass, Mr. Winans declares, is in favor of the proposed road. Mr. Winans says that Portland orig inally opposed the Lolo Pass road on the gronud that her Hull Run water supply might Le contaminated. He declares, however, that data can be produced showing the road will not endanger the water system. Forestry Crews Not Yet Busy Stanley C, Walters, in charge of for est reserves of this county, states that the forestry service will not begin work of completing the last mile of the new Cost Cake Highway before June 1. When Jake Lenz, in charge of forestry crews last year, recently be gan work on the county's portion of the new highway, it was erroneously concluded that the forestry service had again become active. "The forestry crews." says Mr. Wal ters, "will not he able to get busy until the deep snowbanks of the region nu ll, and this will be well on into June. We plan on finishing the new grade this season." Mosicr Work to Begin Soon R. A. Josling, in charge of the office of the A. D. Kern Const ruction Co. at IfoaiOft where the concern has estab lished headquarters for paving the Columbia River Highway between here and Mosier and several miles to the east of the latter town, says rapid preparations are being made for laying hot stuff." The company's crusher and paving plant will be located at Mosier. All preliminaries will be fin ished by the time weather conditions will permit laying the surfacing. Mr. Jocling states that traffic will be permitted over the new grade dur ing hours when crews are not at work. Preventative Medicine The tendency of medical science is toward preventative measures. It is easier and better to prevent than to cure. Pneumonia, one of the most dangerous diseases that medical men have to contend with, often follows a old or attack of the grip. The cold prepares the svstem lor the reception and development of the pneumonia germ. The longer the cold hangs on. the greater the danger. Take Cham berlain's Cough Remeov as soon as the first indication of a cold appears so as to get rid of it with the least possible delay. It is folly to risk an attack of pneumonia w hen this remedy mav be obtained for a trifle. TMWM Couple Are Soon Restored to Splendid Uoftltb by Tak ing Tanlae "If ever two people had cause to be thankful for anything they are my j wife and mvself for what Tanlae has MM for us." said W. C. Payne. 121K Puyallup Avenue, Tacoma, Wash. "1 had suffered from stomach trouble for the past eight years. My appetite was poor and 1 would fill up with gas until I could hardly breathe and would have intense cramping pains in my stomach. I became so badly run-down and lost weight and strength it was all I could do to get around. "My kidneys gave me trouble and I suffered from severe headaches and dizzy spells and it was almost impossi ble for me to get a good night's sleep. My wife also euffered from stomach trouble about as bad as I did and was very badly run-down. She could sleep scarcely any at all an had lost weight and strength uutil she could hardly do her housework. "After several of our friends had told us about how Tanlae had helped them we decided to try it. My appe tite returned and now I can eat any thing I want and I never have the slightest trouble afterwards. I not only have regained my lost weight but am completely rid of all ttiv troubles and am enjoying the best of health.
