M FI.XS, Fl KS AMI 1 F.ATII KRS An old black shepherd dog, turning gray around the edges and with one eye blind, trotting down the main street last week, brought recollections of ante-bellum days to Hood River folk. It was Mariooch. mascot 10 years ago of the Hood Kiver University Club and one time property of Henri de Red ding, young Swiss orcbardiat who was called back to his native land to active military service when the great war becan. 'Where the old shepherd ifot the name has been forgotten. To regain that bit of information it might now be necessarv to search the four corners of the globe, for the members of the once famed University Club, with whom the dog was a general favorite, are now scattered afar. But it may be ex- nlained that the name is misleading Mariooch is an all-round be dog, and for years held the Hood River county championship as a fighter. Bulldogs collies and airedales all met defeat when he once secured his famous throat hold, ft was customary to remark 1(1 years ago when one heard the usual noisy accompaniments of a dog fight tat. Mariooch was conquering some new aspirant to the championship or an ig norant country dog that had wandered into the corporate limits. Mariooch has been rusticating for the past six years on the Oak Grove ranch of Maj. Philip H. Carroll. The Hood River County Game Pro tective Association has been informed that the State Fish and Game Commis sion will probably construct a small trout hatchery on Hood river the com ing year. The local game, orgaiiization more than a year ago recommended that a hatchery be located here, and a suitable site, it is said, has already been located. The location of a hatch ery here, is said, is in line with a pol icy recently announced by the commis sion, which propose! to decentralize game fish propagation and establish numerous small naicneries irorn wnicn fry may be distributed by motor truck. City Water Superintendent Price an nounces a new drinking fountain for dogs at the public drinking place on Oak street. The place where dogs may relieve their thirst is supplied from an overflow pipe at the foot of the pedestal where humans drink. Mr. Price says he hopes the improve ment will eliminate complaints from citizens who say that large dogs drin at wi from the place where humans drink.
