C. W. McCullagh has been appointed : to head a Hood River county organiza tion for raising funds for European j relief. A' meeting was held Monday i evening at the Commercial club to out I line plans for the relief drive. "$10 will buv the life of a child until next harvest." Let America entertain at Christmas dinner as many children of Europe as they can afford as their little invisible guests. These appeals from Herbert Hoover, chairman of the European Relief Coun cil, premise Oregon's initial appeal for Khu,UUU to he raised between Decem ber 19 and 25, as part of a nati( n-wide effort to save the lives of U.oOO.uOO of Europe's baby war victims. Enlisted in the emergncy organiza tion recruited under the impetus of the powerful appeal within a week of Rob ert E. Smith, state director, and his assistants, are Liberty Loan, Red Cross, Knights of Columbus, Jewish Relief Association, Y. M. C. A., Y. W. C. A. and many other workers. Ap peals from the head of each organiza tion addressed to the people of the state read as follows : L. Allen Lewis, Red Cross: "In the gradual appearance of reality now rap ! idly increasing after all these unreal years 1 am looking forward to teeing j strikingly illustrated in the completer response to this appeal at this time for the helpless children abroad. Surely a feeling of obligation will arise and real generosity wi'l now take the place of extravagant donation which undobut edly has disappeared. When such an exponent of common sense altruism as Mr. Hoover has been at all times, both in word and deed, comes forward now with this appeal, there can be no doubt but that there is need of the request and an obligation for all of us to respond." BEAUTY AND UTILITY Characterize the GIFTS you'll find at FRANZ'S Your attention is called to a few items in our immense stock which always appeal. East Side orehardists in motoring to and from town the past week have no ticed the activity of a colony of beavers almost in the city limits. The beavers j have felled a large lir tree and are now engaged in cutting it into short links. Their plans apparently call for the construction of a dam across Hood river. Beavers have been found working continuously on the upper reaches of the river, but none have been reported j so close to the city for a number of years. I The dog poisoner is busy again. A 1 and Some Irish setter puppy, the pride of A. F. Davenport, was a victim of poisoning last week. No acts of man can be more despicable than those of me one wno deliberately scatters poi son for dogs. T.. ar Frances Elizabeth Baker, i r You cannot sell your crops unless men are working. Men cannot work unless you buy the things they produce. If yon buy clothing, shoes, underwear, hats, stockings, farm implements, and household articles, you give em ployment to factory workers who produce these things, railroad workers who transport them, clerks and stock keepers in wholesale and retail stores, miners who supply the coal to run the plants and railroads, and countless others, all users of farm products. They cannot eat bread made of your wheat, wear clothing made of your cotton, cannot consume your corn, oats, vegetables, fruit, etc., unless they are working. They cannot work unless you keep on buying. If you stop buying business stops your business and their business. You can't sell crops to the "bread-line" man. 1 his is the greatest country on earth and will continue to do business-but-you can give it a bad bump unless you keep on bu) ing the things you need. Perfectly safe too-now that prices are down. e. c : . Aids aL M. Robber Stamps at Glacier office. Glacier Office Makes Rubber Stamps for Apple Boxes c
