rents in school utTairs people have been
asking me questions touching on the
county superintendent of schools.
I he public has a right to know any
thing it wants to know about public
affairs, so if I can shed a ray of fight
I shall do so.
Given life and health I hone to con
tmue in the county superintendence
until alter the school fair in septem
ber. I have been planning and work
wig with the teachers and pupils for
the school fair next autumn, and 1
want to complete my obligation to
them in this. After that, if the salary
remains the same as it is now. 1 shall
drop out at the first convenient stop
tiing place, if the people wish mv se'r
vices, and if they see that the possibil
ities in the position are large, and if
thev feel that the worker is worthv of
a fair return for his work, 1 shall give
my time and best energies to the
schools of the county. Under no con
dition will 1 accent two school rxsi
tions again. Of that i have had
enough, plus.
The county superintendency is poten-
tially the finest, largest work in Hood
River county. The only limit to the
work is the inclination and the capacity
of the worker. More than 2,000 letters
and 600 other pieces of mail must be
sent out every year. The county su
perintendent should be able to get into
the schools and come to know all the
pupils and do some teaching, especially
the seventh and eighth grades. With
out knowing them well he cannot pro
mote them intelligently. He should
have a part In all school affairs in all
communities and help to bring that hu
man touch deeply and warmly into all
school activities.
In any event. 1 have had a delightful
time in differing and in agreeing and
in associating with the people of Hood
Kiver county, and I thank you kindly
lor all courtesies. Your bread is light.

an inspiration to all of us to live and

Culumhia Rising Steadily
Rising at the rate of nine inches a
day, the Columbia, after remaining
Stationary for the past week, ha
reached the 12 foot stage here. If the
river continues to rise at this rate
steamers will be able in 10 days to
enter the Hood river slough and land
at the high water dock.
The river is gradually submerging
the huuc sandbar ol several hundred
acres north of the city.
