Grocery Phone 3192 JUDGE WILSON LAYS BLME ON MOVIES In an address lfeie the Woman' lub ill) caUt-es fur the delinquencies of and the arole system, Circuit luiigeAYilson laid the Llame largely at the door of moving picture shows ar.d idle momiYts spent around pool halls. He asserted that the spir't of bravado, the inspiration for many youthful inrntts, is often born while bovs attend -on e moving picture slow. He com mended work of the Y. M. C. A. and Bov Scouts in provahpg places if rec reation to substitute for pool halls. It was suggested that there is room in Hood liiver for a building where young iiien may indulge in fornis of healthy ex reise. Judge Wilson regretted that Oregon has no penal institute, except the pem ler liary, for educational punishment of Jel nquent youths. HiLI.ES BUYS MEAD OW BROOK FARM R. E. Scott announced last Friday the sale of Meadowbrook farm, a 60 acre orchard place of the Oak drove listrict. by lr, Joseph McChesney, of Portland, to Mr. and Mrs. John II. (lilies, former residents of Kvanston. 111. The consideration was $35, Oi and the deal is the largest reported here for several years. About 5 acres of the ranch are in cultivation. Thirty acres are set to commercial varieties of apples in full bearing, and eight acres are in pears. The remainder of the land in cultivation is devoted to hay and grain. The ranch is eiuiped with a tine home and other buildings. Itr. McChesney purchased the (dace from J. W. l'almer several years ago. Dr. McChesney originally planned to establish a sanitarium on the place. Mr. and Mrs. llilles, who have six young children, have been making semi-annual visits to Hood River for the past three years. Mr. llilles is ow ner of extensive properties in Mon tana, lie says he decided on Hood Kiver os a place of resilience after ex haustive study of other locations. CREAMERY'S OUT PUT AT HIGH POINT The Hood Kiver Creamery, in addi tion to supplying the local trade en tirely, is now shipping- record amounts of butter to I'orttand. One day last week 1.000 pounds of butter were ex pressed to the metropolis. The day before the shipment reached 5u() pounds. Winter cream receipts have never been heavier than at the present time, l'raticnll.v all fruit growers are now ow ners of cows. Peculiar Fog Seen Here A peculiar phenomenon was wit nessed by local residents Wednesday of last week. A fog. limited to a space about 100 feet over the water's edge was driven down the Columbia goige by a strong east v ind. The white mist had the appearance of the white smoke and steam that is so often seen st retim ing up behind a speeding locomotive. While the wind blew 60 strongly from the east on the lower level, a Chinook was apparently hastening from the coast at an altitude of several thousand feet. Fleecy clouds were driven at a rapid rate toward eastern Oregon. Cleveland Will Be Demonstrated Interest of orchardists is now cen tered in tractors, becoming annually more popular in drawing orchard culti vating machinery. II. (I. and H. A. Hartshorn, representing the Alexand-er-Hadley Co., of Portland, state dis tributors for the Cleveland tractor, have arrived here and will spend sev eral weeks demonstrating the Cleve land. The Hood Kiver CarHge, local Cleveland dealers, have sold tractors to a number of the ow ners of larger orchards. J. R. Nunnmiiker & Sons have just purchased their third Cleve land tractor. Freeze Damages Nursery Stock The severest damage suffered by Hood River orchardists from the De cember cold weather results from killed nursery stock. Two year old pear trees, too, were badly nipned, ac onling to Cordon (i. llrown, w ho has made an exhaustive investigation. The deep blanket of snow acted as a pro tection tu nursery stock and trees. Mr. It row n says his investigation has determined that Itosc pear trees were less resistant to frost damage than other varieties. Bennett Brothers New Name The name of the Gilbert Motor Car Co., a pioneer institution in handling motor vehicles, power sprayers and farming implements, has been changed to Bennett Brothers. R II. and L.S. Bennett, formerly publishers of the Hood River News, purchased the con cern last fall. The newspaper men left their field in 1918 to enter military service. The new tirm declared that indica tions point to a banner year for the automobile, truck and tractor business. Graff Buys Friday Place A. J. (Iraff, already owner of large apple and pear interests, has just pur chased from Frank P. Friday, through the agency of K. E. Scott, a 1! acre full bearing orchard on the East Side. He paid JlO.OOo. Mr. Graff and Lerry Childs purchased a 40 acre pear tract near Dee two years ago, and the crop for 1918 returned about 7f per cent of the purchase price.
