HOOD RIVER GLACIER
OF
MKS. CASTNER NOT
FOR SPECIAL SESSION
To call a special session of the legis
lature fur ratification of the woman
suffrage amendment, in the opinion i.f
Mrs. thas. H. Castner, president i t
the Oregon State Federation of Wom
en Clubs, will ue playing with tire.
Mrs Castner aavs :
"Oriirinallv 1 favored cettirnr the
legislators together for this turi.se.
but when so many of them reserve the
right to take up other matters, in case
of an etxra session, it now seems to
me that we had better allow the mat
ter to rest. We might get the legisla
tors at Salem and have difficulty in
calling an adjournment. From the
outlook, it is difficult to tell just what
kind of a jumble might lie brought on.
U the necessity arises lor action on
the part of our legislature for ratifica
tion, 1 believe the body could tie called
together for that purpose, and every
citizen of the state w ill use his inrlu
ence in bringing about such action.
But at present it behooves us to let
well enough alone.
EX-SERVICE MEN

Local ex-service men engaged in or

action was postponed, only 12 men be-1
ing present. 1'ermanent organization
w ill be anected on the evening of Sep
tember 3, according to present plans.
A membership and publicity commit
tee has been appointed as follows : Ed
ward W. Van Horn. Ir. V. R. Abra-
hamand Fred H. Bell. These men will

deavor to secure a full representation
of the county's veterans at the coming
meeting.
Dahlias Bloom in Dark
Judson CI. Ruggles, local dahlia fan
cier, has been presenting a peculiar
freak- two blossoms of a red variety
of cactus dahlia that opened in a dark
cellar. Mr. Ruggles overlooked a bulb
this spring. He was surprised on corn
ing across the blooming plant the other
day. Without water or earth, except
for a slight deposit left sticking to the
bulb when dug last fall, the dahlia had
thrown up long shoots supHirting the
blooms, which, because of the dark.
were of a peculiar light red.
