The comptroller of the treasury In decisions rendered April 17 and May 3, 1010. has authorized the war depart ment to make settlement of all claims for the li cent difference from place of discharge to place of entry into the military service, also the claims lor additional allowance to actual bona fide home or residence at the date of discharge when such bona fide home or residence can he determined from the affidavit of the soldier information contained service recoru. 1 ne Officer, Washington. D. C, has been designated to settle these claims with the above restrictions. Applications should be addressed as follows : Zone Finance Officer, Lemon Build ing, 1 ravel Allowance, w asliinglon, L. C. A blank form of application, w hich includes the necessary afhidavit for the additional travel allowance may be ob tained from any army recruiting offic er, Ked Cross, or other agencies organ ized to aid soldiers. 1 his affidavit must be accompanied by a true copy of soluier's discharge certificate, certi fied as such by a recruiting officer, or the original discharge certificate, the latter to be returned with check. While payment will be made on the original discharge certificate, claim ants are advised that the use of the copy will eliminate the possibility of the loss oi the original. No further coreaponden.ee is necessary except in case of change in address. A certified copy of discharge certifi cate submitted for payment of $00 bonus and now on file in the Zone Fi nance Office will he accepted in lieu of other copy of original discharge certifi cate. Men who have submitted these certified copies will so state when for warding claim. Payments will be made as expeditiously as circumstances per mit. In the event that the actual bona tide home or residence at date of dis charge, a claimed by the soldier, is not the same as stated on his original service record, the Zone Finance Offic er will make settlement for the addi tional 1J cent per mile on the same basis that the 3J cents per mile was paid, (that is, from place of discharge to place of entry into military service) and soldier may make claim to the Auditor for the War Department for any additional travel pay which he be lieves may be due him. Men who have been discharged since February 2s, 11(19, and paid travel al lowances at 5 cents per mile to place of entry into military service, and whose actual bona fide home or resi dence at date of discharge involve a greater distance, may submit claim to the Zone Finance Officer, W ashington, D. Ferguson Buys Sexton Place J. E. Ferguson, already owner of 23 acres of hearing orchard in the Odell district, has purchased from F. C. Sex ton, of The Dalles, a neighboring tract of 58 acres. Forty-two acres of the new place are in bearing orchard, and the remainder is a wooded homesite overlooking Neal creek. A bungalow and barn are being con structed on the new place. The new home will he occupied by Mr. Fergu son's son, Almont Ferguson, and fam- iy. Walstrom Makes Bad Grade Robert Walstrom, who has been spending the winter in Kansas City, is the first motorist to arrive from tht: east over the Blue Mountain roads. Accompanied by his wife, a small col ored boy and a Persian cat, Mr. Wal strom left Kansas City March 31. The party took a leisurely course. Mr. Walstrom declares that the go ing was excellent until they struck the Lincoln Highway in Wyoming. Idaho roads were good. The Blue Mountain grade, however, was the worst of all the route, says Wr. Walstrom. Quicksand Struck at Bridgesite Digging for solid foundation for concrete piers for a new bridge over Indian creek on Brookside Drive, nn immense deposit of quicksand was dis covered. When an improvised pile diivcr, driven by one of the county trucks proved a failure, apparatus used by Ed Wright in driving piles for his fish nets, was secured.
