Editor Glacier: Many ot us have -noticed the many vacant stores in our city ana that others are going out ol business, and we have wondered why it is. Some of us have given it con siderable thought We have come to the conclusion that there must be something raaically wrong. e Personally, from experience, I find that all prosperous towns in the west are made so principally through their chambers of commerce. For instance, Los Angeles, San Diego, Pasadena, Santa Barbara, and many towns throughout the middle west, south and other parts of the country. Now, we have a chamber of commerce in Hood River. We have Been fit to dispense with the secretary, who does all the work, a live wire. He has been done away.with. Now 1 would suggest, in order to se cure members for the chamber of com merce, that every producer of foods of any kind be made an honorary member of the chamber of commerce, paying in dues of at least $1 each and up, ac cording to their means, and as they see fit to promote the prosperity of the community. Now, the chamber of commerce of every other city I have ever been in has a display of selected product of every nature grown in the county un der glass ana in showcases, so that visitors can see what is raised. Then instead of having a swell clubroom, with a carpeted floor and fancy furni ture for a few to lounge around on, the visitors can walk around and ex amine what they are interested in and a desk is furnished, supplied with lit erature, stating just what can be done with intelligent management on the farm, the orchard and the forest. A ledger is also handy for the visitor from out of town to register his name in, so that additional literature can be mailed to him upon inquiry. The chamber of commerce club room has done an unlimited amount of good through iU'use by the members in helping the national government through its Red Cross, Liberty Bond sales etc., for which it should be highly commended. Now I think a column in your paper devoted to letters from the various in terests in the valley stating their ex periences would help the newcomen and also bring in many others. W. S. Kaestner,
