We are very sorry not to be able to give the election returns but up to date the official count is not in yet. TROUT LAKE. We hear a great many pleasing re marks about the roads In this district. So far as this road district is con cerned, give the credit where it is due, to C. J. Lusk the road supervisor who knows how to spend the people's money right. But the present condi tion of our roads must emphasize another fact, that it does not require the expenditure of from $4000 to $8000 to make a very good road in this country. If the farmers could have all their road money for a ahort time, to spend themselves, they would soon have very good roada. A new boy at the home of C. W. Stewart. The hav will soon all be baled. A good deal has been hauled out of the valley the last two weeks. School commenced on September 4 with Miss Maud Bell in charge of the primary .room and Prof, Sidney Smith of the higher grades. Water was got at a depth of a little over one hundred feet on the Bchool grounds. It is understood that the next well to be drilled will be at U J. Peterson's. C. A. Elmer lost a' valuable horse last week. O. J. Smith is erecting a new house and repairing buildings on what it known as the Powers place. WHITE SALMON. (from tb Enterprise) At a cost approximating $35,000 the Union Meat Company, of Portland, has started the erection at Lyle, Wn., on the Nortb Bank Road, of an extensive sheep-feeding plant that will be used hereafter in regulating tbe supply of stock on the Portland market. Watermelons and canteloopes are ripe on the Bingen Flat and the crop is good according to G. Naka, the best known Japanese gardener of the White Salmon Valley, who baa rented the tillable soil of "The Glades" owned by Mrs. Eversole, and formerly known as the Byrkett ranch. It ia understood that tbe Hood View road is to be given a thin coating of gravel within the next week or two. This improvement is to be done as psrt of the maintenance necessary, and wbicb has been delayed. This should place the highway in first-class condi tion, although the road to date shows little wear.
