OPTIMISTIC PREDIC TIONS ARE MADE (By C. N. Ravlin) I hail the pleasure of talking with a vety prominent railroad man the other u&y, whose name 1 am not at I i her ty to mention. His optimism over the fu ture of the Pucilic coat waa so pro nounced that I will simply have to pass il hIohr to my Hood Kiver friends. In substance hia remarka were aa follows: "This exposition is Koing to he of uiie'stimalile beneht to Oregon and the whole coast. From a close observation, I really believe Oregon is going to get more out of it than probably any other Be'ction. "In 1917 the I'aeilic coast is going to experience the greatest boom we have ever known. Indications point untnis takably to a Republican president at the next election, and im etliately thereafter I predict a tremendous ruBh to the west. "We have been watching this closely for some time. It is the business of a big railroad to keep its ears pretty close to the ground, and we think we can come pretty near telling what is going to happen. We have ou ' confi dential men all over the east, and the reports that are constantly being re ceived at our main ollice clearly indi cate which way the wind is blowing. "At our Omaha headquarters we al ready have on tile the names of over 20,000 people who are coming west to invest the moment financial conditions loosen up. Ihe present tightness of the money market is purely and entire ly political, you can gamble your last went on that." During the past two months I have been doing a lot of boosting for the Columbia highway, believing that ev eryone we can land on the highway will surely get into Hood Kiver valley. I his has brought me into close connec tion with automobile people here, which has given me some uclioite idea as to what we may expect next year in the way of auto travel. D. W. Watkins, secretary of the Au tomubilc Association of California, predicts that at Itaht 110,000 California autos will go over the Columbia high way in 1916. Iwenty thousand autos have crossed the continent, or from cast of the Hockies, to visit the exposi tion. During the month of July Secre tary Watkins says his ollice routed over 4000 cars up through Oregon. Yesterday 1 met P. A. Uunlap.a well known attorney of Los Angeles, and an active member of the Southern Califor nia Automobile club, which is probably the livest organization of its kind in the country, with a membertihip of over 71)00. Mr. Dunlap motored over the high way when it was tiist opened, and made the trip around Hood Kiver valley. He is one of the no t enthusiastic boosters 1 have met. "I would not have miffed that trip for anything," he remarked, "although the going was preity rough. In an other year it will be the wonder ride of the west. 'I hut highway is going to bring more people into Oregon than anything that ever happened to your state. "Next summer an nthcial tour of the Southern California Automobile club is scheduled to visit the Columbia high way. I am going to be there myBelf, and I can assure you a lot of my friends are going to be alonn also." Ihe Portland utomoi lb club Iib rectttly issued a beautiful booklet, entitled, "Oregun's Scenic Highways," containing an excellent chapter on the Columbia river highway. Hood Kiver valley comes in for generouB mention I have personally handled tne distribu tion of over 3000 copies of this booklet throughout California, in addition to Last 3 Days Bargains for Men $6.00 all wool Oregon Mackinaws $4.95 $5.50-$5 water-proof mackinaw shirts $4.45 $1.25 Dress and Negligee Shirts, sizes 85c $3-$2.50 Corduroy and Wool Pants . $1.95 Sweet-Orr Whipcord Pants, culf ami belt loops .. $1.00 Sweet-Orr Khaki Pants, cutf, belt loops. 90c $3.50 blanket lined duck and covf rt coats $2.45 $3.50 Gold Seal Slickers, full length ...$2.65 $4 Corduroy rants, light, dark colors $2.95 75c Outing Flannel Night Shirts 53c Choice of all men's collars, last 3 days . 10c Some Snaps for Boys Corduroy & wool knickerbocker pants . 49c G.c School Waists 49c;35c School Waists 25c $3 School & Dress Shoes, broken sizes $1.95 the thousands that have been given away at the exposition. 1 have mailed copies to 50 of the most prominent automobile owners in every city in California, except Sail Francisco and Oakland, which I have worked through the dealers. Elston Ireland has taken charge of the distribution in Pasadena, and C. W. Hooker is going to do the same in l.os Angeles. The San Francisco papers have all devoted considerable space to the Co lumbia highway, and we believe the Los Angeles papers will be equally generous, when we go after them within the next two or three weeks. From all indications Hood Kiver val ley is going to be a pretty busy place next year. It behooves us to get busy early this winter to make our plans to get the valley and city in the most presentable condition possible. There should be good roads days, clean-up days, and all that sort of thing. With a little energy, individually and collec tively, we can put our valley in a con dition that will cause the visitors to "sit up and take notice." Gus Miller sent in some beautiful Newtown Pippins last week for our display, which, by the way, are the litst to be exhibited in the Palace of Horticulture. J. M. Chambers sent in two boxes of splendid Delicious apples, which I sent to the jury for award, and now have them on display. The De licious and Winter Banana, especially the former, are more generally talked of by eastern people than any apples raised in the northwest. Four boxes of d'Anjou pears have also been received from the Jones orch ard, ntar Dee. These maie quite an impression on the jury, and 1 am confi dent will receive a very high award. In three weeks we will be in the midst of the big apple competition, in which the following states will partici pate: Oreogn, Washington, Idaho, Mon tana, New York, West Virginia, Vir ginia, North Carolina, Arkansas, Ohio, Missouri and California. The only ones I fear are Washington and Idaho.
