Te old lady was astonished at such action. 1 remember how the presidential party was sitting. Mrs. Lincoln went in first. She was followed by a young woman relative. Then came Major Rathborn and the president, the loca tion of whom was favorable to Booth. A little while before the shot was fired, I remember looking over toward the president's box and seeing someone standing against the door. He looked as though he might have been peering through, ard it is said that Booth, who had access to the theatre, had cut a hole in the box with his pen knife. 1 believe he was getting the exact loca tion of the president; for after he en tered the box he knew he would have to act quickly. Then we saw Booth as he started to jump over the railing to the stage. As he was springing down with a dirk in his left hand Major Kainnorn reached for him. He was below the level of the boxlrailing. Booth slashed the hand of the oflicer, and his body with a kind of swing, fell to the floor. And it was then, 1 think, that he in jured his limb. Miss Kean then appeared on the sage and with her hands to her head cried out: 'Uh, the president has been assassinated.' "In a few moments everybody was trying to get out of the theatre. As I reached the stairs six men, bearing the president on a Btretchcr, came by. Ihey were escorted by six guards, who were forced to push the people out of the way with the butts of their guns. I had to put up my hands several times to keep from being struck in the face with the guns. I was willing enough to stop, but the people behind were shoving so that 1 was pressed right up against the guards. "The president was carried across the street from the theatre to a little frame building, and it was there that he died the next morning about eight o'clock. "Mv two comrades and 1 hastened to our place of encampment on Arlington Heights. We had no more man crosseu the wooden bridge than an orderly dashed up and told the guards to not allow anybody to pass out ol the city. Several other members of our company who had seen the assassination were prevented from coming back to camp until the next day." and enjoy a good laugh and forget your troubles. Stark built a fire in his furnace to take oil' the unusual chill of the morning air. Just as he and his wife were preparing to take a trip to Odell, the later smelt smoke. Mr. Stark returned to the house to find smoke coming in large volumes from tbe basement. He turned in the alarm and then grabbing a gar den hose, proceeded to the basement, where a spark from the furnace had started a fire in a pile of trash. Mr. Stark's quick work extinguished the flames before the arrival of the Volun teer fire department. R. & N. men the first of the week surfaced the streets around the passenger station with oil and gravel. The dust and other accmu lation was raked and cleared away by a crew of Italians.
