Kile, wboae tragic death was reported last week, a telephone message from Trout Lake, W ash., where the man bad been employed since August at the Skelley saw mill, having brought the meager facta that he bad been shot to death in quarrel, was, according to later authentic infor mation, the victim of bia own hands. Mr. Kile had recently lost a turn of money in business transactions, and worry over this, bis frienda say, caused him to commit suicide. Mr. Kile's funeral was beld here last Friday afternoon from the Bartmess Undertaking chapel, interment follow ing at the Idlewilde cemetery. The services were conducted by the Odd Fellows of the city and valley. He was a native of Tennessee and 42 years of age. Hia wife and aeven children survive. Mr. Kile waa for five yeara located in the Upper Valley. He had had charge of the place of William Kodenheiser, who so mysteriously dis appeared a little more than a year ago. He was an industrious man and was respected by his neighnors, wno were shocked at the news of bis tragic death. The following letter, to bis wife and sons, was found on hia person: "Oct Thursday", 21-1914. "Dear Darling: This act is not for anything you bave done. I think you and the boys can get along better without me, so don't worry. I have not done anything disgraceful, but there is too much in me I can't stand it any longer. To the boya: Be good to your mother. There is a little money in the bank. Edear you take charge of everything. You are the best boy I ever saw. Lloyd, you and Felix be good boys and don't none of you grieve after me. I can't help what 1 am about to do. Do what you think best about that land at Farkdale. "D. A. Kile. "Them teams is all paid for." There ia an error in the date line of the letter. Instead of Thursday, Wed nesday, the day of the tragie death, waa the 21st. FIRE DESTROYS EAST SIDE APPLE HOUSE Catchine from som6 unknown source the apple house of Phil D. Atwater, of the East Side, was destroyed by fire Wednesday nieht of last week. In ad dition to packing apparatus about 1,000 boxes of fruit were destroyed. How ever, Mr. Atwater fortunately had the lot covered by insurance. The apple house waa near Mr. At water's barn, and it was only by the hardest work that the latter building was saved from destruction. He chatted with the smithies, as he gradually worked hia way toward the case of a big triphammer. Several pieces of waste were scattered on the floor be side the hammer foundation, and pret ty gooiywith a grunt of satisfaction, the chattering man was seating him self. He settled into position, not knowing he was placing his whole weight on the foot lever that operates the trip hammer. With a final grunt he settled down, leaning his head back against the hammer's anvil. As soon as the lever, on which he was sitting, was pressed downward, the trip ham mer was started to work. Boom ! Boom ! Boom I sounded the thump of the enormous hammer. The conversa tionalist was just dwelling on topics concerning the European war. His imagination must have worked won ders; for, from the leap he made get ting out of the shop he must have thought one of the big German siege guns was in action. The man never takes a seat around a blacksmith shop any more. Check Kidney Trouble at Once. There is such ready action in Foley Kidney Tills, you feel their healing Iroui the verv first dose. Accoiding to the Bureau of Crop Es timate of the United States Depart ment of Agriculture, the yield per col ony of bees was 45 pounds. In 1913 the production per hive was 40 pounds. t he increase in production is said to be due to the enormous crop of wild flowers this season. The latest census figures of the bee and honey industry of this state reJate to 1910.; That year there were 8,861 farms in Oregon that kept bees and the total number of colonies was 47, 286. "Chamberlain's Tablets have done more for nie than I ever dared hope for," writes Mrs. Esther Mae Baker, bpeneerport, I, l. "1 used several hot ties of these tablets a few months ago. They not only cured me of billions at tacks, sick headaches, and that tired out feeling, but toned up my w hole system." BEAUMONT ELOQUENT IN DESCRIBING VALLEY (From tha Pcitland Spectator) "When the Great Architect conceived tbi universe he might hava created a mora beautiful spot than the Hood River valley but didn't," eaid Dr. John F. Beaumont, owner of a fine orchard tract in the famous Hood River district. "The Cascade mountains divide into two ranges at Mount Adams, each find ing ita rugged way farther and farther from the other, until they embrace the fertile and beautiful valley of Hood River. Then they gradually come to- S ether ln binding clasp at Mount lood, with that majestic peak barring solidly the aoLthern union of the ranges. The snow peaks at either end stand aentinel over the valley. On that comparatively small spot you will find a more perfect combination cf aoil, sunlight and shades, air drafts and gentle breezes, than can be found in any other part of the world. There isn't a like area on tha two hemis pheres that is so well known, and it is because of tha apple that the valley is so far famed. Co anywhere you will bear of tha Hoed River valley and its great apples. "The inhabitants of Hood River val ley are a thrifty lot of retired mer chants, bankers, and professional men from all parts of the world. They make a hugs success of fruit growing by applying the same business princi ples to their work that brought about success in their former fields of en deavor. They comprise a community of highly educate), happy, and pros perous horticulturists, getting from the Hood River valley the pure joy of life, returning to it energy unbounded, and again taking from it bountiful crops of fruit and a livelihood. "The culture of apples by these men ia an extensive scientific study. The daily care of the orchard treea is car ried out with as much tenderness and aa much enthusiasm as a nurse would use with a patient. These facts ac count for the production of Hood River apples. If you will put the same amount of energy, and a reasonable amount of money, into apple growing that you put into any other class of business, give it your time and are steadfast in your purpose, your result will be certain. Combine this with your financial success, and you will find life in the Hood River valley worth living. "The entire valley is one large intel lectual community. A percentage of college graduates predominates in the social and intellectual life. In Hood River we have a University club of more than 150 members; alumni of practically every large school in the United States and Europe. We have a large Musical club. The eligibility rule ia that one must have been a pro fessional musician. And noted musi cians are not lacking in Hood River. Frans X. Arena, conductor of the New York Symphony Orchestra, spends the summers on his Hood River orchard. "Now I that the Columbia highway is nearing completion, Hood River's fame will be enhanced beyond conception with the traveling public. Motorists from Portland are sure to find the trip to Hood River a most delightful way of spending the week end." Your Fall Cold eeds Attention. No use to foas and try to wear it out, it will wear you out instead. Take Dr. King's New L'iscovery, relief follows quickly. It checks vour cold and sooths your cough sway, rieasant, antiseptic and healing. Children like it. Get 50c bottle of Dr. King's New Discovery and keep it in the house.
